Tap... tap... click... click...
Skylor was tap dancing. She gracefully danced through her studio. She took deep, controlled breaths. She was hurting emotionally. She felt that dancing was the only way to relieve stress. Some people needed someone to talk to, and others write about it. But the redheaded master of ember always found herself dancing her worries away. She found it easier to dance than to talk to people, anyway.
Tap... tappity... shuffle shuffle tap... click shuffle shuffle click tap...
"Skylor? Are you in here?" asked a feminine voice, as a certain black-haired girl entered the room.
"Nya..." Skylor sighed, relieved to see the teenage girl before her.
"Are you alright?" Nya asked, still remaining in the doorway.
Skylor did not reply, but sighed heavily. She really didn't want to talk about her problems... especially not to Nya.
"I'm... fine." she reluctantly replied.
Skylor forced a smile, then began to avoid eye contact.
"Skye, I know that look. I invented that look," Nya walked towards her redheaded companion and placed her hand gently on her shoulder. "What's wrong?"
"Nya, I..." Skylor trailed off with another heavy sigh.
Nya looked down at the floor and slowly exhaled. A small smirk spread across her face as she looked back up at Skylor.
"Oh no... what are you thinking?" Skylor took a slight step back, worried about what Nya was thinking; whenever Nya gave someone that look, it was never good.
"I threw a wish in the well, don't ask me I'll never tell. I looked to you as it fell and now you're in my way..." Nya began.
"Nya... what are you doing?" Skylor moaned. She hated that song, and Nya knew it, too.
"I trade my soul for a wish, pennies and dimes for a kiss. I wasn't looking for this but now you're in my way..."
"Nyyyyaaaaa shut uuuuuuppppppp..." Skylor complained again.
"Your stare was holdin' ripped jeans, skin was showin'. Hot night, wind was blowin'. Where ya think you're goin' baby?"
Skylor walked to the other side of the room to a shelf, which held her spare tap shoes. She quickly looked for a size 8 and a half.
"Hey, I just met you and this is crazy, but here's my number... so call me, maybe. Its hard to- OOF!" Nya was cut off by Skylor, throwing a pair of tap shoes at her.
"Maybe instead of singing, you can dance with me. What do you think?" Skylor asked, trying her hardest not to laugh as Nya glared.
Nya rubbed her arm, where one of the shoes had hit her. "You know I can't dance."
"Well, I could teach you! It's easy. Put on the shoes, and I'll show you." Skylor smiled; a real smile, this time.
Nya sighed and put on the shoes. "I'm good at everything else, so why not? I'll probably rock at this." She stood as soon as the shoes were on, and walked towards Skylor.
Nya was very wrong.
She and Skylor had been tapping for an hour and a half, all the while, Nya had been trying to get Skylor to tell her what was bothering her.
"Alright, Nya. Try a heel drop." Skylor said, demonstrating.
Skylor stood on the balls of her feet, then dropped her heels, creating a satisfying clicking sound on the wooden floor. Nya attempted to immitate Skylor's simple demonstration, but slipped on the slick floor and fell.
"Ow..." Nya sat up and rubbed her head.
Skylor stifled her laughter.
"It's okay. You can laugh. I'm not perfect like you." Nya muttered.
Skylor snorted then burst into laughter. "You think I'm perfect? I'm anything but that!"
"But... you're so... so angelic."
"Mmmm... I wouldn't say angelic. Graceful, maybe," Skylor helped Nya to her feet. " but definately not angelic."
"I watch you dance, and you're absolutely stunning. Then when I do it, I look like a chimpanzee on steroids." Nya muttered.
"You aren't that bad. Besides, this is your first time. Now, let's try something simpler. Do a scuff." Skylor hit her heel forcefully onto the floor, and brought it forward, in front of her.
Nya copied Skylor's movements. Soon enough, she was scuffing like there was no tomorrow.
Skylor continued to show Nya some moves, although she kept falling. Skylor observed the areas Nya was struggling in. They all had the same general idea.
Skylor began showing Nya brush forward and brush backward. They began doing the steps in sync and soon enough, Nya was doing the move without thinking about it.
"So, Skye... what was bothering you earlier?" Nya finally decided to ask.
"Oh... it was just something Cole said... Hey, you look like you're getting the hang of it. Now try this."
Skylor began to do Shuffle Slap Up Changes. She gracefully traveled across the floor, still tapping quickly and perfectly. Nya stared at her, jaw dropped.
"I don't think I can do that."
"Try.. please?" Skylor begged.
Nya sighed and attempted to do the advanced dance move, failing and falling onto her face.
"Ow..." Nya groaned as she got up.
Skylor snickered. "I was kidding. That move takes years to practice."
Nya, being the persistant girl she is, got up and began to attempt the move again, falling every time.
"Skylor, seriously. Give it a rest." Skylor insisted.
Nya groaned. "This move is impossible! I'm so good at everything else! Why can't I be good at tap dancing?"
"Nya, how do you think you got so good at everything you do? You weren't born good at everything you touch, surely?" Skylor asked.
"That one's easy. It takes a lot of time and effort." Nya replied.
"Tap dancing is the same way. It takes years of practice. I have been dancing for years. You have been dancing for barely 2 hours. If you keep practicing, you'll get the hang of it." Skylor smiled knowingly at the black-haired water ninja.
Nya sighed, still wishing she could dance like her redheaded companion.
"Hmmm... Hey, how about we do a dance routine?" Skylor suggested.
"Wait, really?"
"Uh huh! It'll be easy. We can choose a song and I'll show you how to dance to the beat!" Skylor explained.
"Sure! How about," she paused to think. "Uptown Funk?"
"Okay, that has some pretty good beats to tap to. Lemme show you the routine..."
an hour later...
"Shuffle shuffle stamp. Shuffle shuffle stamp... brush brush stamp.." Nya muttered under her breath, as she danced.
Skylor clapped, "Bravo! You're doing good! Why don't you come take a break, though?" Skylor sat down, and Nya came to sit next to her.
"Hey, Skye? Earlier you said that something Cole had said was bothering you. What was it?" Nya asked.
"It's really stupid." Skylor replied.
"It's okay; I'm used to stupid by now. I grew up with Kai, after all."
Skylor laughed slightly. "Promise not to laugh, okay?" Nya nodded. "Okay, well... he said my hair reminded him of a tomato... because it's red, and my clothes are like carrots. So I'm a carrot tomato."
"That's rude..." Nya muttered.
"Yeah, but I'm okay. Tap soothes me," Skylor stood again. "continue?"
"Sure thing!" Nya stood and followed Skylor to go practice.
"Ready?" Skylor asked.
Nya nodded and they began to dance.
Tap tap brush.
Tap tap scuff
Tap tap brush
Clap stamp clap jump
They continued until they had finished the entire routine.
"You did wonderful, Nya! Now are you ready to do it to the music?" Skylor asked.
"You know it!" Nya replied with confidence.
Skylor began to start the music and hum to the tune. They started off with stamping their feet to the beat. Once they got a little farther into the song, Nya began to mess up the moves a bit. She had hoped Skylor wouldn't notice as they kept dancing. Once they got to a series of quick taps and scuffs, Nya fell.
Skylor once more had to refrain herself from laughing as the water ninja got to her feet again.
"From the top?" Skylor asked, making sure the girl still wanted to go on. Nya nodded.
The duo continued to dance. Nya had a 10 second period between her falls where she danced perfectly.
"You're doing just fine, Nya. Don't overthink it, though..." Skylor whispered, trying to keep Nya's confidence up.
They were nearing the end of the song. Skylor gracefully continued to dance as Nya tried to follow what she was doing. Just when they were about to finish, Nya tripped and fell on top of Skylor.
"I'm sorry..." Nya quickly apologized, getting off Skylor.
"It's alright," Skylor laughed. "I had fun."
"Ya know, so did I. Even if I did fall more than I succeeded." Nya agreed.
"Plus, I feel so much better now, and I don't think that's thanks to dancing." Skylor sat up.
"Huh? What do you mean?" Nya asked, slightly confused.
"I'm saying that being with you, my best friend, made me feel better. Thanks for being here, even though it was stupid." Skylor hugged Nya.
"Awww... no problem. You're a sister to me. We always have each others backs." Nya smiled slightly.
Skylor smiled as well. The two girls stood up and said their goodnights, realizing how late the hour was, and headed off to bed.
