Love Changes Everything-Chapter 1: Anya

We just stared at each other for a moment, then burst out laughing. Something in her eyes and the way they were trying so hard to look serious- I couldn't help but laugh. We were, after all, sisters, weren't we? Katia knelt on the ground and began to pick up the seeds scattered everywhere. I slipped to the floor and helped her. Outside, the storm roared and blew snow against the windows, while inside my younger sister and I sat at a table near the crackling fire and talked and laughed. "I hope Mum and Dad are all right out there," she said worriedly, biting her lip and staring out the window. "I'm sure everything's fine," I assured her, when, inside, I wasn't so sure. "Oh, Anya, I wish I were so sure. They left hours ago for Mr. and Mrs. Yanshri's. It's not that far to Shvénrisky!" I watched as conflicting emotions danced across her beautiful face. Many, many time's I'd wished I was as beautiful as dark-haired Katia. Myself, I was pale and blond, with annoying curls that never stayed as they were supposed to. "I'm sure they were invited to stay overnight when the snowstorm began. Don't worry yourself, Katia, everything will be fine," I repeated. Shivering, Katia stood and moved closer to the window, and it was almost as if she knew what was happening in the city of Shvénrisky, where Mr. and Mrs. Yanshri, a young couple my parents often visited, lived. Many hours later, I finally gave in and pulled Katia up the stairs and flopped her into her bed, climbing in beside her. "Promise me you'll wake me up if they're not home by morning?" she mumbled. I said nothing.
