live to regret

She had never been the type to forgo books for a party. The pulsing, loud noise of the music didn't appeal to her, she preferred cozing up with an open book, her hair pushed back and glasses perched on her nose. While others labeled her as boring and stuffy, Marlene thought herself just right, a combination of serious and studious.

They could all have their parties, their fun, their dances, but what use would ever come of it? Nothing. They would all waste their life, throwing it away like garbage, while she actually made something of herself. Marlene McKinnon was going to change the world, one step at a time. And while they all pointed their fingers at her and laughed whenever she turned down their offers to attend a party, she was going to be able to look down at them and sneer, once she had accomplished changing the world.

The only person that seemed to actually get her, was Remus. He was nice, she thought, looking at him, laughing happily as he was surrounded by his friends. His hair was a perfect shade of brown, not like her dull shade of blonde. He had a nice laugh, not like Sirius, who tended to go overboard with his chuckles.

Lily found him a good friend, she knew, and that counted for something. Out of all of the girls in her domorties, Marlene only liked Lily. The red-head was nice and made her laugh, and had often said that she was the only one to see a different side of her. That remark, carelessly spoken in Charms, had filled Marlene with happiness. Someone, someone other than herself, knew that there was more to her than what met the eye.

Remus liked a good book.

Remus got her.

Remus preferred reading to rioting.

Remus got her.

Remus liked Butterbeer in preference to Firewhiskey.

Remus got her.

He actually understood her.

When he smiled, her heart thumped loudly and her eyes started to glaze over. Her palms started to sweat and she couldn't form a sentence. The only thing she regretted in her short life, the only thing she had forgotten to do, was tell him that she liked him. That was the last thing that ran through her frantic mind before she fell to the floor, eyes shut and blonde hair splayed out on the kitchen floor; the green light flashing brightly. Remus had never known how much she cared for him.

She regretted that.

- in my empty heart, you have left a mark

Okay so Remus/Marlene have now become one of my favorite couples. Weird, huh? Last line comes from Leona Lewis's song The Best you Never Had. Reviews are love! :)
