The Circular Nature of Things

Agent Booth and Sweets are exiting an interrogation room.

"So, are you and Dr. Brennan going to get married?"

"Based on past experience Sweets, I'm done asking any woman that question."

Sweets looks at him confused.

"Sweets, After 6 years it is finally all good with me and Bones, and we are having our first baby together. This is great Sweets, and I'm not messing with it."

"I'm happy for you Agent Booth."

"So am I Sweets. So am I."

Sweets adds, "You do realize that when you state that you are having your 'first' baby with Dr. Brennan that this implies your desire to have additional children with her."

"And to you this is a revelation."

Booth and Brennan are walking in the moonlight along the reflecting pool at the Mall. A full moon creates a perfect, glowing, circular reflection in the water of the reflecting pool. They both stop and look at the reflection.

"Aristotle wrote in the Physica that the circle was the perfect, first, most beautiful form. "

"You're looking rather circular, perfect and most beautiful these days Bones, so I'm inclined to agree with him."

"There are also those who contend that a circle represents the infinite nature of energy and love. With no beginning or end, it is whole and perfect."

"Those are some good ideas too."

"But they are wrong. About a circle being perfect. The Heisenberg uncertainty principle tells us that we can't perfectly position anything. All the basic geometric shapes are concepts we invent, none of them exist in nature. We use them to model phenomenon that are approximately represented by these ideal shapes."

"So, it will be my responsibility teach our kids to say 'bata-bing, bata-bam".

Brennan looks at him inquisitively and raises a questioning eyebrow.

Booth adds, "Just a quick, simple note to myself, that's all."

Brennan puts her hand into her pocket and then pulls out her closed fist. Booth is watching her. Holding her hand out, towards Booth, she unfolds her fingers to reveal two rings resting in her palm.

"I have two circles that are not perfect, but that I would like for you and I to share, Booth." She looks at him and smiles, then she adds, "The sparkly one with the diamonds is for me."

He takes the ring from the palm of her hand and she retains the simple, gold band.

"Ladies first," Booth suggests.

She takes his left hand in hers. Before she slides the ring onto his ring finger she adds, "I hope you are not disappointed that this is not a civil or religious ceremony."

"I'm good with this, Bones. I love this. This is great." Booth's response is sincere and enthusiastic.

She holds up the gold band, peers through its center for only a moment then returns her gaze to Booth and states, "All geometric figures are in your head. In the same sense, there are no numbers. There are only symbols of numbers." She places the ring onto his finger adding, "But that does not prevent us from working with numbers as though they actually do exist."

Booth takes her left hand in his and slips the circular band onto her ring finger. He watches the ring until it is placed completely on her finger. Then he looks into her eyes.

"To working with numbers as though they actually exit. And to the infinite nature of energy and love."

Brennan smiles adding, "Bata–bing, bata-bam."

Booth bends down and picks up a stone. He hands it to Brennan who tosses it into the reflecting pool. The stone plops, squarely into the moon's reflection. And it resonates, creating circular waves out from its center.
