"Prince Soma, come're, I've got a surprise for you!" Meena called out to her young charge, who was playing in the garden by himself.
Soma looked up, and abandoning his toys, the seven year old ran over to her. "What?" He stood there, waiting; as he rocked back and forth from his heels to his toes.
"Close your eyes and hold out your hands," she said.
When Soma did so, he felt her place something in his hands.
"Open your eyes, Prince Soma."
The seven year old opened them. "Halva! Thanks!"
"You're welcome," Meena said, adding, "And thank you," when he broke it in half and gave her some. His generosity never failed to surprise her as he could be quite a naughty handful when he wanted to be. He was always demanding her attention except for the rare moments when he would wander off to play by himself. Those were the times she would reward him with sweetmeats or cheap little trinkets she would find in the marketplace to amuse him.
Soma grinned back at her. He bit into what was left of his piece. Eye's wide in shock, he felt a sharp pain in his mouth along with the metallic tang of blood. Tears welled up in his eyes. "Meena!" he wailed.
"Prince Soma! Are you alright?" She panicked, fearing she had unintentionally poisoned him.
Soma continued to cry while she looked him over for sighs of injury when she noticed the bloody saliva in his mouth. "Prince Soma, please open your mouth for me."
Hiccupping through his sobs, Soma opened his mouth.
Relief flooded through Meena's veins. "It looks like that loose tooth of yours fell out."
"Yeah?" Soma sniffled.
"Yes…" Meena hugged him. "You'll be fine now."
Soma giggled.
"Now go play."
"Okay…" He scampered off...
