title: cold sheets
words: 159
"I love you," he whispered, but it felt fake, just like always. She smiled even though she knew, because she always knew. Teddy didn't fall in loveānot with Lily, not with anyone.
"You don't, Teddy. You say that, but you never mean it. Never."
"But you love me," he says slowly, tracing circles with on Lily's back.
Lily pulls the blankets up around her naked body, staring at the ceiling. "I've been...desperately in love with you for three years, and you...you aren't. And you never will be, because you're you. You don't...fall in love."
"I'm sorry," he says, not looking at her.
"You're not, Teddy."
"I don't know what to be."
"No. You don't."
"It can't be easy, loving someone who doesn't love you back."
"And that's why I can't do it anymore. Goodbye, Teddy." And then she leaves him and the sheets grow cold, and he lies awake, wondering what happened that made him shut her out.
