Prologue: Shattered Glass
The raindrops slid across the windshield, making tiny rivers on the glass. Suddenly, they were violently brushed away by the wipers. Kate sat in the front seat of her Mama's convertible, glad that Mama drew up the top of the car before the rain started. Kate was nine years old at the time. Her sparkling green eyes were so full of life they nearly glowed in the pitch darkness. Her hair was woven into two French braids, crowning her well-proportioned face with shiny brown hair. The girl watched the clouds dump more water on the rain-slicked road. It pooled along the sides and when the convertible hit it a big wave came and splashed the already- soaked ground violently.
Kate saw waves like those at the beach once. A big storm brewed in the horizon, but she knew her parents were always there to protect her. "Anytime you are scared," Mama said softly. Her eyes were the same as Kate's, though they were wise and deep. "Just call my name, and I will be there for you." "Always?" Kate said through her tears, "Always." Mama said back. Mama hugged her close to her body, and Kate could hear Mama's heart beating strongly.
Suddenly, something impacted the Driver's side with great force. The car flipped over and over. Kate was screaming. It was the end of the world for her. The spinning car eventually stopped, and everything went black for the next four years.
Kate's last memory was shattered glass everywhere. She screamed, in pain, in sorrow, in fear. But mostly fear.
Chapter One: Awakening
Something stirred in the room. A ventilator was hissing and beeping. There was quiet talking in a language which seemed, at first, unfamiliar to me. What's going on? Where AM I? Suddenly words begin to flood the vacant space that, until twenty-four hours ago, was my mind. I opened my eyes. The room was brightly lit- Wait… Light? What is Light? Did I finally die? Or am I Reborn? I flick my eyes around the room, and suddenly everything is clear again. Hospital. Nurse. Help? How long have I been asleep? Kate… A lady in rubber duck scrubs walks in carrying a syringe filled with a clear liquid. She lifted her blond head… And dropped the syringe, stifling a yelp. She ran out the door.
As many as five doctors came rushing in, along with a lady with auburn hair, and behind her, a man with messy blond hair and glasses. Chatter fills the room. "God… Miracle! Kate survived… Unbelieveable! Oh my little Katie will live again! All thanks to the Ticker." I opened what must have been my mouth to chime in, and the crowd goes silent. "Wha-Where am I? Why am I in a bed? And what the heck is a Ticker?"
The doctors exclaim, and the auburn-headed lady fainted. "After this many years… She can still speak. The Ticker was only supposed to…" Silence again. Suddenly I notice the pain in my arms. No wonder, they are attached to so many machines, all whizzing or beeping or making some sort of mechanical noise. "And can SOMEBODY unhook me from all these… Contraptions?"
Will Kate be
unhooked from the Machines? What surprises will the Ticker hold for
her?
