Tony knew what it was about, after Pepper had called him to come to meet her at the Avengers Tower. Both had been distant from each other since the last battles that took place after the destruction of his mansion in Malibu.
Pepper had her arms around her body, staring at her shoes as Tony stood in front of her in the empty room. Even with the fringe covering her face, he could see the dark circles around her eyes, the same ones he'd had since his last mission, when they had started drifting away from each other. Because he had promised to stop building armors and had broken that promise.
"Tony." She finally said, lifting her head and feeling that she would fall apart with her decision, as she watched Tony, the love of her life, his face tired and sad and then, to her surprise, he walked toward her.
Tony could see in her eyes that she had already made her decision, but even so, he closed the distance between them taking her in his arms and hugging her, seeing that she looked like she was going to fall apart at anytime.
"I've got you Pepper..." He murmured, placing a kiss on her forehead, wanting to feel her closer to him one last time, feeling the sweet taste of her skin in the kiss, the warmth of her body pressed to his.
Pepper closed her eyes, telling herself not to cry, she was a grown woman, feeling his lips on her forehead, as well as the safety of his arms enveloping her and she knew that no matter how much it hurt, she was doing it for both of them, so that when they got their hearts broken, they would have a chance of healing them. To reflect where to where they were going in that relationship.
"Tomorrow morning I'll be going to Sidney, in a business trip, Tony." Pepper said, opening her eyes and finding Tony's, dark and tired eyes. "And I think it'll be a good opportunity for us to take a break in our relationship, for an undetermined time."
"I'm sorry Pepper... For breaking my promise." Tony said in a low voice and she nodded, giving him a sad smile and then she brought both hands to his face caressing him tenderly, watching him sigh at her touch and she pressed her forehead to his, murmuring:
"I know, I understand and it's okay... But we need to take some time, we've been tired, arguing,.." Tony agreed, he didn't want to, but he knew she was right. "And just as I suffer for fear of losing you in a battle, I know you're afraid that I'll get hurt, that I'll be kidnapped again, so it'll be good for us..."
"I love you Pepper... You're the only one that will always have my heart..." He said one last time, feeling his eyes shine and she nodded, placing a kiss on his face, leaving the mark of the lipstick there and she said, before leaving:
"I love you too, Tony. You were the one to whom I trusted my life."
