Hello all! This is my very first Narnia fic and it was written during my writer's block from my Harry Potter and Highlander fics I'm currently supposed to be working on. If you're waiting for updates for those, they're on the way. Anyway...I know this is short but it was kind of designed that way. Hope you enjoy it! Please review and tell me what you think.

When They Were Gone

It had been twelve years since the disappearance of the Kings and Queens and there was unrest in Narnia. Tumnus sat in his chair in Cair Parivel, arguing with Orieus and various others over some changes being presented to King Peter's laws.

"And if High King Peter were here," Orieus was saying, "he would approve of these changes."

"If King Peter were here," Tumnus shot back, "we wouldn't have to make these changes."

"But he is not here," Orieus said.

Tumnus sat back in his chair, put his head in his hands and sighed. Orieus looked around and dismissed the others in the room. Tumnus heard him walking forward, but didn't look up.

"Mr. Tumnus," Orieus said softly, finally getting Tumnus to look at him. "They are gone and it us up to us to keep their country safe until their return."

"I know," Tumnus said wearily. "I know but no one ever said anything about having to change. Why must we changed the things they set up for this country?"

"Because those things aren't working anymore," Orieus said softly, but sternly. "There are sons of Adam invading our land unlike any we have ever encountered. They are evil and they must be driven out before real damage is done."

Tumnus looked up into the centaur's eyes and knew he spoke the truth.

"They will destroy our country," Orieus pressed on, trying to stress the importance of a quick decision. "King Peter's country. Queen Lucy's. Do you want that?"

"No," Tumnus whispered, shaking his head. "No. I don't."

He thought of King Peter and King Edmund who had, before they disappeared, grown into great men. He thought of Queen Susan whose beauty had princes from all around vying for her affection.

And Lucy. Dear little Lucy. The love of his life...in a totally platonic way, of course. Not that he hadn't totally dismissed the idea at one point. However she was too young and he was too old and it would have helped if they were the same species. But she was the best friend he'd ever had.

Now she was gone. They were all gone and had decided, if anything happened to them, leave him in charge. He could not uphold their memory...her memory...by letting some strange men take over their country.

"Okay," he said with a great sigh. "Get me the amendments. I'll sign them."

Orieus nodded, knowing how hard it had to be for the faun. He motioned for a page to bring out the papers.

"You're doing the right thing," he said as Tumnus signed his name.

"I hope you're right," the faun said, throwing down the quill and sitting back. "I hope you're right."

And for the first time since the battle against the White Witch, Narnia was getting ready for war.
