One Last Try

It seemed like it was too late. It seemed all was lost. The battle was over. Beast Boy shed a tear. He'd tried.

"Little green one. You always try so hard. And always fail so completely. Thinking you can defeat all of us alone." The brain spoke, impartial on the outside, but his inner self was gleeful. He'd finally done it. The green menace, the wildcard- gone. There was no one left to stop him.

"Fuck you! Someone'll stop you! Even if we're all dead, you will never stop the Spirit of the Hero!" Beast Boy cried, defiant till the end.

"Mala." At that the Great Ape perked his head.

"Yes Master?"

"Crush him," Mala's eyes widened, "He will not be frozen."

"But Master, we-"

"Do not test me" The Brain spoke, in his emotionless tone. "He will become an example."

Beast boy had been listening with his eyes closed. He had accepted that he was eventually going to die long ago, before he had his powers. Back when he was a kid dying from disease. Back when he was Garfield Logan. Somehow it didn't seem so bad this time. He'd found, and had a great time with, Rachel Roth, aka Raven, and had many friends. He'd spent his entire life protecting people. He had only one regret. He could never say goodbye to those people. Maybe that was why he wasn't afraid. And even as Mala's great hands crushed his limp body, he smiled, knowing that it was worth it.

Robin sank to his knees, his mind blank. The SOS signal had gone blank on Beast Boy's communicator. It could only mean one thing. Tears in his eyes, it hit him.

"He's gone. He's.. He's really gone" For the first time since his parents died, he started to sob for his lost friend.

"Titans," Robin spoke solemnly, trying to stay strong, "We are gathered to commemorate a great friend to us all. The life of any room he was in. The light in the darkness. A shining example to us all." Starfire was bawling, remembering the times they had been together. Cyborg was tinkering with a mini replica of the T-Car that he had, trying to drown out Robin's voice. Raven was absent. She hadn't left her room since Robin broke the news. People stopped trying to talk to her after a week, hoping that she'd sort it out. It had been a month now.

"Beast Boy was a loyal comrade. Whenever we were down, he was there. If there was an injury, he'd be first there. Even when there was no hope and the horizon was bleak, he'd be the first to try and help whoever he could." Even Batman was bowing his head. Robin had called him and told him the news. Within two days he'd dismantled there entire empire, and beaten down every single villain there. "He was a light to us all."

Raven walked in, looking a mess. She was more pale than ever, and looked gaunt. Her sunkern cheeks and blotchy face made her look like the walking dead. She sat down just in time to hear Robin's last words.

"May we all remember him. May we all think of him. May he live on in our hearts."
