Rick rolled over and stretched out his limbs. He noticed instantly that he was alone in the bed, an unusual occurrence nowadays. His detective partner, and fiancée, rarely left without waking him up to say goodbye. Rick cracked open an eye and stared, slightly forlornly at the empty side of the bed. Something caught his eye. Rick opened his other eyes, and reached out to grab the object that was occupying Kate's side of the bed. It was a card. 'Happy Mother's Day.' It proclaimed in big letters on the front. Rick raised an eyebrow and flicked the card open. Inside was a generic message, and underneath, in Kate's small handwriting, was another message. 'I'm at work if you want to talk.' Rick was up and out of the house within 10 minutes.
"Happy Mother's Day?"
Kate looked up from her desk, and smiled. She looked a little nervous.
"Happy Mother's Day?" Rick added some emphasis.
Kate nodded.
"Really?"
Kate nodded again.
"You're...?"
"Uh huh."
"No way!"
"Yes way."
Rick pulled Kate up out of her chair, and spun her around. He kissed her delicately on the lips. He hugged her tightly, and buried his face into her hair. He whispered, "Happy Mother's Day, Kate."
Kate smiled against Rick's chest. "Happy Mother's Day, Rick." She replied.
Rick grinned and held his fiancée close, enjoying the feel of her pressed against him. He was overjoyed, and so was she. This is what life was all about.
A/N: Just something short, stemming from today being Mother's Day. I hope it made you smile, even briefly.
