Note: just a very short drabble. please excuse any bad grammar or if it's just a bit rubbish, i haven't written anything in ages so i'm definitely a bit rusty!
I'm Not Asking Forever From You
Gwen watched Arthur riding away to yet another skirmish that he had to sort out. Accompanied by a trusted and seasoned company of knights, he looked every inch the confident and dignified king that she knew he would be. However, she wasn't certain what lay ahead for her in terms of a relationship with him. Of course, they had shared many life-changing and life-threatening experiences as well as a few private and tender moments but there was a nagging doubt in the back of her mind. No matter how honest and gentle they were with each other, Gwen couldn't miss the faint look of panic that appeared in Arthur's eyes every so often.
There was no questioning the honesty of his affection towards her and her reciprocation of it but it seemed that any hint or mention of the future seemed to make him immediately tense. Gwen was more than aware of the challenges that faced them should they ever decide to take the next step of openly acknowledging their feelings but truth be told, any future together remained more fantasy than reality.
If anything, she was content to let matters be for the time being or, at least, savour each valued moment with Arthur for what it was. As someone once said, "What will be, will be."
Perhaps the prince thought that she saw him purely as her meal ticket out of a life of servitude? Gwen shook her head making the soft, dark curls dance about her face. No, that was ridiculous. He might be a bit slow on the uptake sometimes but he surely could not mistake the way she felt about him as anything other than genuine.
If she didn't think that it would frighten him away, she would tell him that she wasn't looking for a grand declaration of love from him, only that she wanted to be with him for as long as they could. She sighed deeply to herself. Maybe the best thing to do was to let him go now before things could develop into something more complicated and she would save herself a lot of heartache.
