Man's Best Friend

Acceptance of Fate

A/N: We all know that Max was more victim than villain, but what if our mysterious OC paid him a visit and stated some stuff that was allowed to happen within permitted limitations?

Shortly after leaving the collie's house, the genetically-altered Tibetan Mastiff known as Max stood on the sidewalk in front of a young man who was anything but happy right now.

"You know, I could've restored you to your previous state before you were altered by Jarret permanently like I did temporarily for you and Heidi not too long ago," the dark man told the dog.

"Arrf-arrf!" Max barked at him, speaking of his acceptance of fate.

"It's not what you did with Heidi that I'm upset about; it turns out she does like you, just not what was done to you, which is why during your brief time with her, you were as normal as any other dog. I'm upset that you ate Boo."

Lowering his head, Max was reminded of the cat the boys set him loose on.

"Look, Max, part of the reason I'm allowing you this one-day pass to be free is because there are some people that deserve to be hurt by you in some way or another, but so long as you don't cross the line I set for you," he told the dog, who barked his gratitude at this pass. "I want to save the cat and Lori's boyfriend (Max growls at him)… Hey, don't give me that, Max; the guy's not in competition with you. A dog will always be a man's best friend, but a dog can't always be in competition with a man for a woman's love. And Lori does love you; she knows you're a victim and everything violent you do is only the result of your abuse by Jarret. Anyone else, excluding the mailman you buried later for me to return to life, are, more or less, fair game for you, but I need the cat back now, please."

Max understood this…and regurgitated Boo out onto the sidewalk.

Boo was…a little worse for looks, covered in stomach fluids and dog drool, but still alive; since the snake DNA spliced into Max allowed him to digest food slower than most dogs, it would've taken him three days to digest the cat, but it would've taken only eight hours for it to suffocate.

The man picked up the cat and pat Max on his head.

"Good boy," he told him. "Go now. Enjoy the remainder of your last day."

Max then ran off, leaving the man with the cat.

"Mew," went Boo.

"A dog may be considered Man's best friend, but so can a cat," he told the cat. "Let's go get you cleaned up and returned to your owner…then I can resurrect the mailman."

A/N: Well, to those that know who the OC was, you'll know that he did something like this at least once before, giving a measure of mercy to someone that has done wrong as a form of probation, but this is the first time he allowed someone that does wrong as a result of being wrong to live out their final hours so long as they stayed in line of the their limitations. What did you think?
