Ammonite Love
"Huh..." Jack stared at the fossil laying in his palm. He was silent. Sam watched his face, her amusement growing , knowing he didn't have a clue why she had given him this, as a first anniversary gift, of all things. He glanced at her again. "It's a fossil." He pointed out. She laughed lightly.
"It's an ammonite Jack." She took his hand. "It represents us." He raised an eyebrow. He was struggling to decide whether she was being genuinely sentimental or making a joke. He didn't want to say anything that could ruin either.
"Because I'm your fossil?" Too late. She laughed again, stepping closer to him and placing her hand beneath his, lifting the ammonite between them.
"It used to be a sea creature. It grew from something small into something beautiful. Then conditions became too harsh for it to survive, so it got buried in the sand. But in death it kept it's shape. It didn't degrade or waste away. And now it's been unearthed and it's rock hard." Jack spared her an amused glance but his attention went straight back to the fossilised shell in his hand and the feel of her hand beneath his. "It'll never lose the shape it is, because of the environment it was buried in. It'll always be just as beautiful but now it's stronger." Finishing her story, she looked into his face, knowing he would understand. He was lost in thought, staring at the ammonite. She wished she could see his eyes beneath his lowered lashes, knew there would be a multitude of emotions there that he rarely showed to anyone. She would be eternally grateful that she was one of the lucky few.
Jack remained silent for another few moments and Sam began to worry, until he tightened his hand around the ammonite, pulling her to him in one swift movement and kissing her in the way he had that made her knees give way. When he pulled back, holding her up, he grinned down at her as she regained her composure.
"I love you." He kissed her again, quickly before adding, "But I want you to stop spending all your free time with Daniel."
