It was a dreary night in Las Vegas. There had been rain all day and it only got worse when the night fell on the city. The wind was so cold that no one daren't go outside. The city seemed empty; the only people who were willing to brave the cold night air were partygoers wondering the streets looking for another nightclub. And Sara Sidle.
There was a bench outside the crime lab; it was the most peaceful place Sara could find at night. Often, after a case that hits too close to home she would just come out to her bench and try to forget her horrible past. This case was no exception.
A young girl, only seven years old, had been another victim of domestic violence and she died because of it. Talia had only just turned seven, yet her parents made her fend for herself. Every night Talia would have to endure the endless beatings from her drunken mother, eventually Talia's mother went to far and stabbed her baby girl – there was no remorse in the mother's eyes. "The little bitch deserved everything I did to her"; these words wouldn't leave Sara's head. Sara had remembered the time her own mother told her words to a similar effect, "you're worthless, you don't deserve me, I can't wait to get rid of you". Sara was numb, numb from the cold but also numb from the pain. She didn't realize she was crying until a tear fell upon her hand and it sent a stinging sensation through her body.
'Why are you crying? Com'on Sara, don't let the cases get to you like this' Sara was willing herself to stop the tears from flowing but she hadn't succeeded.
"Sara?" A familiar voice called from behind her "why are you sat out in the rain?" The voice came closer and someone sat down beside her. Although she was still numb she felt warmth on her face. Someone had brushed away her tears.
"The Talia case got to you that bad?"
Sara was too cold to speak, so she nodded.
"Sara, babe, things are going too well in your life for you to think about your past" He gave Sara a hug "As long as you have me things will always be good for you" he kissed the top of Sara's head and she remained in his embrace.
"I love you Nick" Sara managed to whisper.
"I love you too," Nick whispered back.
