School Play

"Now, Shane. Please don't embarrass mommy. Okay?" My mom said to me.

I frowned inside my patriotic costume that my mommy made for me. I was inside a giant box that she painted red, white and blue. There was three holes in it. One for my face and two for my legs. It was amazing. Miss. Tibby said I looked exactly like the Ah-merry-can flag. Our class was assigned the holiday

of the 4th of July out of all the holidays in the year. I was going to be in a play with my brothers.

Jason was gonna be in the Valentine's one and he was dressed up as cupid.

Nate was in Thanksgiving one as a pilgrim.

I got to be a flag and that was way cooler than a dumb ol' cupid and pilgrim.

Unlike me, the rest of the class had to dress up like some old people from a book Miss. Tibby showed us. Me and Ben and Mitchie got to dress up as flags. Ben was the French flag and Mitchie was the British flag. I still think my costume was cooler. Their flags didn't have stars on it.

"I promise." I sighed.

My mommy pushed me towards the backstage where Miss Tibby was anxiously waiting for me.

"Oh Shane, you're here!" She gasped.

I spun around, "How do you like my flag, Miss Tibby?"

She smiled down at me, "It's lovely."

"Miss Tibby!" Mitchie shrieked, "You said mine was love-aly."

"All the costumes are lovely!" She looked at each and everyone of us.

"Hmph!" Mitchie marched off.

I was placed center stage with Ben and Mitchie beside me. The rest of the class was standing on risers behind us. I kinda wish I was standing on them.

Miss Tibby walked over to the piano as we waited for the curtain to open. Suddenly the red curtains parted in the middle and the crowd of camera and flashes blinded me. I closed my eyes because I couldn't use my hands. They were trapped inside the box.

The piano began to play and we began to sing.

"America, America
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good
With brotherhood
From sea to shining sea."

Mitchie took a step forward, taking the spotlight away from me. I quickly took two steps to regain the attention. I stopped singing and glared at her.

"You're not America!" I yelled.

"I don't care!" She yelled back.

She took three steps ahead of me and walked right off the stage. The audience gasped and Mitchie's mom quickly rushed over to her. Miss. Tibby abruptly stopped playing and stormed over.

"Shane!" She scolded.

"I didn't do nothing!" I defended.

I could see the outline of my mommy storming her way over.

"Shane Grey!" She pulled at my ear, leading me off stage. "You can never stay out of trouble can you?"

I pouted, "But I didn't do nothing! My hands are trapped! Remember?"

She gave me an incredulous look, "What?"

"I didn't push her!" I whined.

My dad joined in and wagged a finger at me, "When we get home, you will go straight to your room."

"But-"

"Shane, I don't want to hear it." My dad said.

I pouted. Not fair. Even when it's not my fault I still get the blame.
