Prologue
January 2012 – Seattle, WA
"Maddie -"
The brunette paused; the rain was picking up, creating a wall between them. She refused to turn around though. Her resolve would crack if she saw his face. A chill ran through her as the rain continued to soak through her clothes. The leather coat she wore did little to protect her from the downpour.
"Don't leave. We can work this out. I can make this work. I'm-"
"Apologizing won't help. You went too far and it's over. I'm making this easy for you...and for me...my badge and gun will be with Fury no later than 0600," her words were firm as her body trembled. She couldn't shake the feeling that this was a mistake, that she should trust in his words, trust in him. "Goodbye Clint."
He didn't try to stop her as she disappeared into the dark, falling sheet of water. He was frozen in panic - praying for a miracle that would never come. His friend, his partner, ...his lover…she had lost all faith in him and simply walked away.
