I'm on a roll! For as long as I have prompts, I'll try to keep this up. For now, they'll all be marked complete, as I don't write these with full stories in mind, but who knows? Maybe one blossoms into a longer story.
Enjoy!
Chloe wants to let herself get lost in Lucifer's arms. After all, she has no idea when she'll see him again. But she can't. Rather than let him pull her in, she takes a step back and turns her face away.
"Detective?" The Devil steps forward, the longing clear in his voice. "What's wrong?"
She hadn't intended to let her fears and anxieties about their relationship come out like this, but now that he's asking she can't stop herself. "I don't know how much longer I can do this, Lucifer."
"What do you mean?" His voice is flat, and Chloe has known him long enough to know that he's trying to mask pain.
"I…" She puts her head in her hands. "Where is this going, Lucifer? Where are we going?" As much as she loves him, and she knows he loves her, Chloe has always been pragmatic. She needs to know how their relationship can move forward. If it can move forward at all, given the circumstances.
"Well, I thought I'd take you to a movie, then possibly dinner-"
"You know that's not what I'm asking." She glares at him, begging with her eyes for him to be serious, for once.
"Detective…Chloe…I thought you were content to take it day by day."
"I thought I was, too, but it's hard when you're not here most days." Chloe crosses her arms, feeling small and insignificant. She knows it's not fair to compare herself to the scope of what Lucifer must be enduring. But still. Her selflessness can only go so far and she can't help how she feels.
Lucifer flinches. "If it were up to me, I'd never leave you. You know that."
"Do I? You've left so many times before. And now your absences just keep getting longer. I never know when you're coming back and every time you do you act like nothing's wrong." She sits at the piano, rests her arms on her legs. "Like this doesn't affect you the way it affects me."
"Of course it affects me." Lucifer's words are hard, frustration only barely contained. "Every day up here is eons in Hell. I…I try to act like everything is normal because it's the only way I know how to cope." He kneels in front of her, taking her face in his hands. "I miss you every moment I'm down there, and it's only the thought of seeing you again that keeps me sane. Please know that, Chloe."
His eyes beg her to believe him, the tears falling silently. Chloe wipes them away, sighing a shaky breath as she finally lets him pull her in.
"I know." She places a soft kiss against his lips. "I just…I wish things were different."
"I'll fix this, Detective. I promise you." The conviction in his words strike her core, the truth of his oath plain in his eyes. Unsure of how to respond, she kisses him again, letting his embrace wash over her. After everything, she's still taken aback by how gentle he can be. "I'll find a way."
"We'll find one." She whispers. "Don't forget I'm here. Let me help you. In any way I can. Just don't…don't leave me behind and try to do it alone." Chloe looks at him again, relieved at the realization dawning in his eyes.
"You have my word."
