Samwise Gamgee was a respected gardener as the years progressed, renowned not only in Hobbiton but far abroad. The sweetest fruits, the largest and most flavorful vegetables came from his gardens. Rare flowers from far lands grew under Sam's ministrations.
So the gossip flew and Hobbit women tittered when he planted rows and rows of kingsfoil amongst the other plants. A neighboring gardener asked scornfully why he grew weeds.
"Athelas saved Mr. Frodo's life!" he replied heatedly, "That alone gives it right to grow in my garden!"
Kingsfoil would grow in the gardens of the Shire for a hundred generations.
