Coincidence
By EmeraldSoleil
He'd never really believed in coincidence, not before that night. But there she was, her face six inches from his in the semi-dark, her blue eyes wide. In such close proximity, the smell of her was overwhelming. It was a combination of shampoo, perfume, and the spicy, heady scent of her blood, the same blood that now ran through his own veins.
He had ducked out of the morgue without a word, hoping to slip away unnoticed. She'd found him anyway, and he could hear her heart going crazy in her chest - he'd startled her. The too-fast beat echoed in his ears, making it doubly difficult for him to concentrate on what she was saying. Something about saying good-bye?
"Good..."
Before the word could leave his tongue, her lips pressed against his without hesitation. When she pulled away a second later, her eyes were a puzzle of emotion he couldn't read. Didn't know if he wanted to for fear of what he would find there.
"...bye," he finished, the word falling from surprised lips.
Then, almost as if to reassure herself it wasn't a mistake, she kissed him again. And, heaven help him, he could do nothing else but kiss her back.
What was he thinking?
He wasn't lying when he told her relationships between vampires and humans were inadvisable. Even more than inadvisable, they were most often disastrous. After all, who could stand by, untouched by the ravages of time, while a lover wilted and faded away? Faced with an eternity of grief and loneliness, many was the vampire who changed a lover, willing or not. And that never ended well.
He knew the dangers, yet there he was - kissing Beth Turner under the glaring fluorescence of parking garage floodlights.
And he was liking it.
Abruptly, she turned and fled the garage, her blonde waves bouncing as she ran. Mick grinned. When the sun rose in the morning, he would have to work that much harder to keep his distance. But in the meantime, who was he to deny such a strong coincidence?
