Borrowed Time
"This is it," He murmured, as he was about to give her the button that would kill her and her mother. It was obvious that she was living on borrowed time by the damage to her body, "See you on the other side; probably sooner than later."
Going through his memories, he realized that this was a possibility, considering he and Sam had died numerous times before. It seemed they were living on borrowed time as well.
"Make it later," She requested as her lips curled upward, attempting a smile.
They looked at each other for a long moment, realizing this was the last moment they would see each other alive. Dean leaned forward to kiss her head, border line crying. He looked at Jo again and then their lips met.
It was then he realized he had fallen in love just in time for it to fall apart.
After seeing her again, it brought all that back. He blamed himself; she had defended him and she ended up getting torn to shreds...literally. She did deserve better, better than him.
"Dean," Jo's voice filled the room. He was in the kitchen still contemplating the events that occurred earlier.
"Jo," Dean stood up, setting down his half-drunken beer, "how are you-?"
"I don't have a lot of time," She explained, looking up at him. Her face was as pale as ever, but somehow, she didn't seem like a ghost at all, "There is nothing you could've differently, Dean."
"I didn't-" He started, receiving a stern look from Jo.
"Shut up. We still would've ended up right back here," She looked down at his feet. Was it possible for ghosts to cry? If it was, Jo was about to, "I should've gone the second those dogs tore into me, but you were the one to get me away from them, before it was too late."
"You still died, Jo," It was a reoccurring feeling, regret and heartache, within the Winchester family. He felt it when she died and he felt it then.
"It doesn't matter," She insisted, "You gave me more time."
Her hands touched his face, and he could feel it. Both of them had tears dripping down their cheeks. She placed her lips on his. He kissed back, knowing that this would be their last one.
"Are we going to see each other again?" Dean asked, knowing the answer.
"Do you want to?" She smiled as she backed up, remembering the conversation they had long ago.
He smiled slightly, "I wouldn't hate it."
She laughed a little and then said, "See you later, Dean."
"Make it later."
"See you later, Jo," Like she had earlier that night, Jo vanished. This time, he didn't call out for her.
Dean knew then that she was really gone this time. She was still Jo, though, headstrong and demanding to get her way.
One day, he would die and remain dead. That's when he'd see her again.
Dean couldn't wait for that day to finally come.
