REGINA CAMBELL –Prologue

It was just after dark when I went out for a walk.

When I was walking past the pond in the park, I spotted two children, laughing mysteriously by the waters edge. The boy couldn't be any older than seven and the girl no older than nine. What was really strange was that these kids were dressed in black from head to toe. In a town like this, that wasn't normal. Not even on Halloween.

I really don't know what came over me, but instead of walking away, which is what I should have done, I walked directly towards them. When I was about three feet away from them, their laughter stopped and their heads snapped quickly in my direction.

I stopped dead in my tracks, even though what I really wanted to do was run away. But I couldn't. I was held there by both their dark, cold, empty eyes.

"A-A-Are you lost?" I finally asked, finding my voice.

They looked at me, their faces holding no emotion, for what seemed like forever. Then they turned to each other slowly, devious smiles appearing on their faces.

A chill ran through my body.

"No," the girl said simply. "We're not lost. We've found what we were looking for."

"Oh," I said swallowing, confused but pretending like I knew what they were talking about. I really had no idea. I didn't even want one. I just wanted to feel like I could handle this situation.

"What're your names?" I asked, clearing my throat.

"We don't need names," the girl said tonelessly, eyes narrowing.

They had to be joking, right?

"Where... are your parents?" I asked suspiciously.

"They died," the girl said happily.

"How?" I asked without thinking.

Where had that come from? It was none of my business and I usually wasn't this nosy. But they both seemed happy that I asked.

"We'll show you," the girl said.

Before I could even react, they came towards me with incredible, inhuman speed. They were STRONG. Well, strong enough to pull me to the pond even though I put up a pretty good fight.

Together, ignoring my terrified screams, they dunked me under water, my face hitting the bottom. Blood came out of my nose and water came in through my mouth.

I felt my kicks come in contact with flesh several times, but their grips never loosened. In fact, they tightened, their fingers digging into my skin, more blood flowing into the water.

As I kept fighting, my eyes widened.

I mean, it didn't take a psychic to see what was going to happen. Sadly, by little kids.

So- not exactly knowing what had taken place and why to me- I closed my eyes, knowing they'd never open again.
