They came to pay their respects, only to find that the church was filled. Exchanging glances, the four of them decide amongst themselves that they will stay in the back, where they are less likely to be noticed.
It is more than likely that more than half of the people present in the chapel don't even know the child about to be buried. But it isn't surprising. The child's own parents aren't there, because they're awaiting trial. The city as a whole is mourning the loss of an innocent life, and the people who took that life have expressed no regret.
They listen to the service with varying degrees of twisted amusement. It's obvious that the one offering up a eulogy was close to the girl, but if so, who is this person to give a eulogy when they did nothing to help? The sight of city council members sitting near the front annoys them: it is only in cases like this that these politicians will make an appearance, as if they're actually trying to do something.
The whole thing is over before they know it, and people start to slowly file out to make way for those that will bear the tiny casket. The four of them exchange glances again before deciding to move against the crowd. It isn't easy going, but they soon reach their destination.
The casket is still open when they reach it. The bruises that were present on the child's face when they found her are gone, covered by makeup. Her eyes are closed, and she looks almost peaceful. It seems ironic in a way that now she looks as if nothing can hurt her, when for her entire life, pain is most of what she knew.
Her arms are folded over her chest, holding a stuffed animal close to her. The scene in itself is a heartbreaking one, and it only serves to disgust them more. They've seen many cases like this in their line of work, but each one has the same effect on them. They want to know what drives a person to do something like this to someone as innocent as a child…someone who can't fight back. And an answer never comes.
The dress that the child is wearing is white. It is a color that symbolizes many things, among them, purity and innocence. And as they turn to follow the rest of the crowd out, there is but one thought in all of their minds.
Only angels wear white.
A/N: I have too much time on my hands. Seriously. Anyways, so...SVU's not mine and that's all I have to say before I start rambling, so there you have it.
