Chapter one

A New Beginning

He straightened after shifting another heavy box. `God, I think I need a break.' He was a sixteen year old teenager who had a shock of spiky, black hair, he was fairly tall and muscular, although, as he was thinking at that moment; he hated hard-work. He walked downstairs and into the kitchen where his Mum had been also busying herself unpacking.

`Mum,' he started.

`Yes Chad?' his Mum replied.

`Have you unpacked the glasses yet?' Chad asked.

`No, not yet,' his Mum answered, `But I think they may be in that box over there' she pointed.

He stepped towards the box, opened it, found a glass and went over to the tap to pour himself some water. He went into the living-room and sat down on the brand new couch. As he brought the glass up towards his lips he heard a knocking at the door. He stopped. Puzzled, he walked over to answer the door, glass still in hand. Strange, he thought. He and his family, which consisted of only a mother and a father, had just literally just moved in and they did not know any of the locals.

He turned the key in the lock and pushed down the handle. On the doorstep he found a boy who looked slightly older than himself, though they were similar builds. `Can I help you?' asked Chad. The boy on the doorstep offered his hand to be shaken and replied, `Hey, my names Johnny, I saw that you've just moved in and I thought I'd come over and meet you,'

`Well, very nice to meet you Johnny. My names Chad, I just moved here with my Mum and Dad, I didn't really want to, I'd only just settled in at the last place, I didn't even have time to make any friends,'

`Parents; who needs 'em? Anyway nice to meet you as well, but I gotta go do something, catch you later.' With that he turned and ran down the street.

Chad stood there surprised. He'd been at the last place he lived in for a week and hadn't made a single friend, but here he'd made one within the first hour. `This could turn out better than I expected,' he said to himself.

He closed the door and went back to his drink. He was returning his glass to the kitchen when his Mum's voice swept in from the living-room.

`Who was that at the door, Chad?'

`Just a local kid who came to meet me'

`Oh good, you have a friend already. See? This is much better than the old place.' `Yeah, I'd just been thinking that' he said `well I'm off to finish unpacking'

`see you later, Chad.' He turned and walked upstairs.
