"And I suppose... if it's my last chance to say it..." the Doctor paused, their eyes meeting before he began again, "Rose Tyler..." The transmission had been cut off there before he could utter another single word.

For several seconds he could do nothing but stand there, staring at the wall of the TARDIS, his mouth agape while uncommon tears ran down his face. In the few seconds he allowed himself to feel the full effects of her departure from his life, the Doctor thought over ever place they'd traveled together, and what had happened at those places. In those few seconds he spent mourning Rose's loss, he came to many conclusions but one stood out in his mind with painful clarity. For someone who was a member of the race who had mastered time itself the Doctor had an occasional remarkably unfortunate imperfect sense of timing and or place.

Why had he asked her about where the gap had come out since when he knew they only had around two minutes to say everything they wanted to say to each other in goodbye. What did it matter where the transmission had slipped through so as long as it did? His questions and her answers had wasted some seconds of the precious little time they had left.

For a Time Lord a mere few seconds can seem like an eternity, especially when they marked the end of a time that would never come again as it did this time. The Doctor knew that no matter how much more time he had left in the universe, he'd never know... or love anyone like Rose Tyler again.

Never.
