I gaze out into the white abyss as Havoc and Breda bitter-sweetly depart from my arctic post. I don't get visitors, so it's quite lonely here, yet I'm reminded of my days as the Flame Alchemist.

Laying down, my face to the fire and a blanket around me, I think about my past. Out of everything I've been through, there's one face that keeps coming to my mind and it won't leave me alone, no matter how much I will it away. The face of my lover.

I'm laying in a field, looking into the pale cloudless sky with the golden sun beating on my face. I'm wearing a white long sleeved shirt that's partially unbuttoned with a tight pair of jeans. Suddenly, I see the most beautiful emerald eyes before me, the ones from the face that won't leave.

"Maes!" I exclaim, throwing my arms around the man, his purple silk shirt smooth against my cheek.

"Hey, Roy. I've missed you." I'm speechless. Words cannot describe the horrible longing feeling for the one thing I can't have that was selfishly taken from me. He smiles. "It's okay, I know how you've been feeling. I've been watching you."

"Even in the shower?"

"Especially in the shower!" He rolls over and sits up, so that I'm facing him on his black dress pants, his arms around my waist and mine around his neck. "What's this I hear about you giving up a promotion?" His air is joking, but his eyes are worried.

I rest my forehead against his chest. I feel his comforting arms move so that they're on my back, drawing me closer to him. "I can't take the job. It'd mean having to use alchemy and being reminded of the people that have died because of me."

"You joined the military to help people, right?"

"Of course! But, instead of helping, I'm just killing."

"People died because of things you regret. Sitting in an arctic post isn't going to help change anything. The only way to do that is gain more rank in the military so you can make a difference in people's lives. And that means that you need to take up the role of The Flame."

I sigh and look up. "You're right. How selfish of me."

He smiles. "You're not selfish. You just needed your sidekick to kick you into shape."

I rest my head against his chest, but hear no heartbeat, which reminds me of what happend to him. "Hey...how have you been?

"Lonely. There's no one here, since I'm not allowed on the other side."

I look back up at him. "Why?!"

"I have unfinished business, so my soul can't rest," he motions towards shackles on his ankles, "I need to be reunited with my soul mate in death. Just like you do. But, you also have to avenge the people's deaths." He says, giving me a nudge, telling me who he needs.

"I'll just have to take my life. I can't ask you to be here all alone for my sake."

"Please, don't kill yourself. If you do, you'll be sent to a reality away from here and I'll be here alone for eternity."

"How am I able to feel you?"

"Part of my soul is with you, holding your head so that you can se me through your dream. But, it takes a great amount of energy to do this, so I'll only be able to do this once."

"Thank you, Maes. I need this so much. I think I'll be able to get through life, now."

His response is a light kiss on my lips. I deepen the kiss and we stay there for what seems like an eternity. I fall back onto my back, taking him with me. He rolls me over, so that I'm on top of him and his arms are around me."I'm running out of energy, Roy. I'm afraid I have to leave you. I love you, Roy."

"I love you, too, Maes."

My eyes flutter open and I see the most beautiful pair of emerald eyes fade before me. I stand up, put on my white gloves and walk out the door.
