Divergent

Bright light struggles to filter through the opaque window glass of the warehouse. Once the windows were tinted blue, but with the passage of time, a thick layer of dust has settled in a way such that one can no longer make out the blue was ever there. Not that it matters, of course, to those inside. Their only concern is the chant inscribed on the northernmost wall of the warehouse: "We believe that cowardice is to blame for the world's injustices. We believe that peace is hard-won, that sometimes it is necessary to fight for peace."

Day after pounding day, the initiates train for the sole purpose of upholding this sacred credo. Stage 1 is the physical stage: Hand to hand combat, athleticism. Stage 2 is the emotional stage. Initiates learn to face their fears through simulations. Stage 3: the mental. Only the elite pass this last stage, in which all of the skills learned must be used in order to survive. Those too weak to withstand the initiation are dealt with accordingly. Those few who are skilled enough to pass move on to become Dauntless. They uphold the highest form of justice in the land.

You weren't just another Erudite initiate that day you picked Dauntless. Your family always thought that you would be just another tame professor working in one of those labs, but you had a different idea. From 5 years old, you had been training. From climbing to chasing the other kids and then kicking their asses, everyone had secretly known where you were heading. And when it came time to pick your faction, you proudly walked up to the stage and pledged allegiance to Dauntless.

Who doesn't remember when you passed that third stage of training? You went through hell and back in that test, and did it all as fast and as easily as Four himself. And in the end, you stood up from that chair and the tester straight in the eye, as if to say, "that was it?" The tester stood up and nodded, and you stormed off to go find a tougher challenge to beat.

That brings us to today. You have captured every Erudite criminal, beat up every Candor prick, and fed a bit of harsh reality to the Abnegation. Still, though, you find yourself looking at another assignment sheet. "What other mission could Dauntless possibly have in store for me," you wonder, as you check out your latest assignment. Luckily for you, this mission is easy. The only thing the assignment reads is, "Prom, Anjali?"
