Changes Are Coming

I own no rights to Meet Me In St Louis characters. Takes place during the scene where Warren calls Rose and Mr. Smith makes the announcement about moving to New York.

Rose Smith gingerly placed the phone back in the receiver. She was slightly disappointed that her phone call with Warren had not lasted longer. Thirty Six seconds was not a long conversation to have with anyone. She walked over to her seat at the table next to Esther and started to slice into her piece of ham.

"I'm sorry you didn't get the proposal you were expecting." Esther said.

Rose squeezed her sister's hand under the table. " I'm sure he was shy to do it over the phone because he knew all of you were listening. Stuff like that is better done in private settings anyway."

"When do you suppose the proposal will come?" Agnes asked.

"Who knows? Hopefully soon."

Alonzo Smith muttered something under his breath.

Rose looked up from her plate and stated at her father expectantly.

"What's wrong Papa?"

"Well, I'm a little reluctant to give my oldest daughter away to a boy I've never met before."

Rose smiled. " Don't worry about that Papa. You'll love Warren, he's the sweetest man you'll ever meet."

"You're also a bit too young to be getting married. You're only 18."

"Well I'm sure once he actually proposes he won't want to get married right away.. I'm hoping he'll wait at least a year. I don't know what to expect from him exactly.

Later that evening Rose was in her room writing a letter to Warren when there was a knock at her door.

"Come in."

Agnes peeked her head in through the door

"Can I talk to you?"

Rose immediately noticed that her sister looked distressed.

"Of course you can. Come sit on the bed."

Agnes took a seat on Rose's bed and Rose stood up her desk and went over to join her sister.

"What's on your mind?"

"I just can't make sense about why we have to move."

"Well, Papa's job is transferring him to New York. I think this will be a new adventure for all of us."

"Aren't you sad about leaving St Louis?"

Rose nodded. "In a way yes. I've grown up here and have a lot of friends that I've known for awhile but all of us will make new friends once we move."

Rose didn't want to tell her sister that she was excited about moving closer to Warren and was hoping that question wouldn't come up in their conversation.

"You and Es are so excited about the fair though, do you think if we move we'll be able to come back for it?"

Rose had momentarily forgotten they would be moving right after Christmas. "I'm certainly hoping we'll be able to come back for the fair."

" Are you excited about the possibility of living closer to Warren?"

'Very intuitive.' Rose thought to herself as tousled her sister's hair playfully.

"You little mind reader you. Yes, I am excited about living closer to Warren."

"Daddy doesn't seem keen on you marrying him."

"None of you have met him yet.. once you do I promise you will like him."

"I wish this wasn't so sudden and that Daddy's job wouldn't transfer him in January. I want to finish of the school year with my friends."

Rose kissed her sister on the head. " So do I darling. As I just told you this will be a new adventure for all of us."

"I love you Rose." Agnes said.

"I love you too."
