A/N: Samcedes/Mervans prom one shot. The idea would get out of my head until I wrote it. Slight spoilers/speculation for the prom episode. Let me know what you guys think!

Mercedes stood outside the gym where her prom was being held, shivering slightly because of the cool breeze. As much fun as she was having, she needed to get out of there when the slow dances started. She was thankful to Rachel for arranging her, Jesse, Rachel, and Sam to go together as a group but she didn't want to push her luck with assuming Sam would wanna dance with her.

She was jolted out of her thoughts by a voice coming from behind her.

"Mercedes?" came Sam's questioning voice, as she turned around slowly to look at him.

"Hey, just came outside for some fresh air."

"Yeah it's kinda hot in there huh," Sam chuckled and shoved his hands into his suit pants pocket.

"Something like that, yeah." Mercedes smiled and looked up at the sky.

"So… it has nothing to do with you not wanting to slow dance with me?" he inquired, with a slow smile spreading across his face.

Mercedes stared at him in shock for a minute before bursting out into laughter.

"It's not that I don't wanna dance with you, it's just- I- don't like any of the songs they're playing. Man that DJ is not good," she trailed off lamely and looked down at her feet.

Sam smiled softly at her before walking over and offering his hand.

"May I have this dance Miss Jones," he smiled.

"You're joking right? We're outside! And plus there isn't even any music."

"Then we can make our own, come on," Sam insisted, as the smile on his face grew wider. When she still hesitated, he sighed "Fine, make me start singing."

With that he hummed a few opening notes and then began to sing.

Tale as old as time,

True as it can be

Barely even friends,

Then somebody bends, unexpectedly

Mercedes laughed and then reached to take his hand. Once she did, he spun her around and placed one hand on her waist. She giggled softly and took the next verse.

Just a little change,

Small to say the least

Both a little scared, neither one prepared

Beauty and the Beast.

As he spun her again, he joined in to sing the next part.

Ever just the same,

Ever a surprise

Ever as before

Ever just as sure, as the sun will rise

They slowed down so that they were barely moving now; Sam had never noticed how gorgeous her smile was and he kinda liked that he was the one making it happen right now. They sang the ending verses together.

Tale as old as time

Tune as old as song

Bittersweet and strange

Finding you can change

Learning you were wrong

Certain as the sun

Rising in the east

Tale as old as time

Song as old as rhyme

Beauty and the Beast

As they both finished and Mercedes looked up into Sam's eyes; she couldn't be sure, but if a kiss was ever necessary, she figured that this would be the moment. Their faces got closer and closer and then-

"There you guys are!" came Rachel's exasperated voice from the gym door, and they quickly separated. "I've been looking all over for you guys! They're about to announce prom king and queen," and with those words she was gone back inside.

"Um I guess we better go back inside huh," Mercedes said worriedly, hoping that Sam wouldn't get all awkward now.

"Yeah…," he began slowly and started to lead them towards the door. Suddenly he stopped and turned back to look at her, "But we're gonna talk about what happened cause I don't think I can just forget this," he finished off.

"Ok sounds like a plan," she answered, with a huge smile making its way across her face, and took his hand as they re-entered the gym.

She had always been afraid that she would be the girl who had no one to dance with at her prom. Instead she got her very own fairy tale moment and she technically had Rachel to thank for that.

Not that she'd ever let her know this.
