Elizabeth had never tried to sleep.
Truth be told, the concept was lost on her. She understood it at a very rudimentary level, as did she as if an expert, yet as she lay on a settee couch in the dim light of the Velvet Room, she found herself curious, desiring sleep.
She closed her eyes, letting her phantom heartbeat slow to a lazy 33 beats per minute, slow enough that any mortal would perish, their life ebbing from them. However, even her slowed functions weren't enough to make her feel a sense of sluggishness. Rather, she felt, if possible, more alert.
Instead, she altered the temperature of the room, adjusting it within her mind to a cool 20 degrees celsius. She conjured up additional blankets, the couch morphing beneath her into a lush, twin bed, big enough to accommodate her frame. "This should do," she mused, mind flickering back to her reading from earlier. Snuggling down into the blankets, she closed her eyes, and waited.
After ten minutes, she was still awake.
Sighing, Elizabeth rose, waving her hand in the air. A tray appeared, simply popping into existence, laden with treats: a navy tea cup filled with a warm cup of skim milk, a plate of bright red cherries, pits already gone, a small bowl of jasmine rice, steaming hot, and a few slices of sweet potatoes. All foods guaranteed to release her muscles and cause an influx of serotonin. "Just what I need," Elizabeth hummed, motioning the tray closer. She picked up the cup and took a long sip, warmth flooding her sense.
After a few minutes, she finished her bedtime meal. The tray evaporated with the remains and she settled back in. She dimmed the lights further, and closed her eyes. "Good night, Velvet Room" she whispered.
A calm sense of being settled onto Elizabeth's soul, and she felt her tangible body and ever-lasting spirit separate. Suddenly, the bed felt thick and welcoming, and she allowed herself to float from her body. Her functions slowed to a steady, even tempo, and her eyes felt truly heavy.
And for the first time in her life, Elizabeth slept.
