On that day, Akari Fujisaki had followed Hikaru Shindou home after school like she always did, a routine so set up she didn't even notice it happening (and neither did he now that she thought of it), though truth be told she had always had a thing for him — but he wasn't exactly an unpopular boy, what with being captain of the soccer team anyway, so she could obviously expect some competition, but back then she was childish and silly and didn't care, so of course she'd mess up.

On that day, they'd both been young and childish, truly immature is how Akari would put it now, but that was the day where he had begun growing up, and Akari had realized that he was the one who was destined to be great, not her, he would go on without her, and even though she had always thought that she would need to haul his lazy butt along beside her, he would be great and smart and loved and she could only stand beside him... or not.

On that day, when the sun finally set and it would be time to go home, just like any other day, she was heading home alone, and she should have noticed how weird and crazy and just totally insane she was, and he was, but she was too busy wiping away the tears of fear or anger, she didn't know which.

Since that day, he'd been distant, and she understood; she couldn't pester him forever, after all, but he had stopped looking at her, stopped turning back and smiling cheekily at her, and for the first time he realized that she missed that annoying grin.

Since that day, his future was set, all blue skies ahead, and she was selfish and wanted to stop him, wanted to shout out Wait, wait for me, but she could not deter him, he was a train already picking up speed and a running sprinting for the finish-line, he could not and would not stop, especially for someone like her.

Since that day, she had tried to keep up with him, but he ran fast and she didn't, and she didn't belong in that world so cut out in black and white, no she'd stay by the sidelines, bringing him plain onigiri for lunch like she always did just to the science room instead.

Since that day, he had been caught up in his world, his life, she didn't matter and she didn't need to matter and she knew that, but she was a normal human being, a selfish one, and she wanted to be seen, she wanted to stand by his side, but he had moved on and she didn't — she was a ghost fading out or whatever he wanted to call her, she didn't care anymore but she did she did she absolutely did but he didn't notice he had his eyes dead set on the goal.

And since that day he did not turn back, and since that day she had always been watching him from behind.
