Passing Through the Screen of Tears

Prologue

Disclaimer: I do not own any of the character, people, places, or food in this fic. I do not have Tamora Peirce locked up in my basement. I do not hold her hostage, no matter what I may claim.

A/N: I dearly hope that you enjoy this sad little fic of mine; it has been pounding inside my cranium, and has finally found its way out. This takes place a year after Lady Knight. Please review, I really like reviews, they taste good, they taste like chocolate to be precise, so spread around the love of the reviews, they taste like chocolate.

Kel sat down at her desk, ready to sift through the enormous pile of paper that had accumulated on her desk while she had been away. She was none too eager, but she was at last ready to do it without willingly falling asleep. The midmorning sun strained in through the window panes the summer's heat accompanying it. Almost mechanically, Kel began to work.

Around midday Tobe burst in.

"Lady Kel," he began, obviously flustered

"Yes," Kel asked, looking at him over a piece of parchment

"There's someone here for you, a man…" Tobe trailed off

"Did this man give you his name?" Kel asked, scanning the parchment while she did so

"He said he was your brother" Tobe said

"Show him in," Kel said, placing a wary hand on her sword

Kel continued reading her parchment while Tobe ushered in her visitor. Kel put down the parchment when the visitor entered.

"Anders!" she said, happy to see her brother "sit down." She said, gesturing at the chair in the corner.

Anders's shoulders were hunched; a sad frown ran over his face

"So," Kel began, eager to see what had brought her brother to her office "what is going on?"

"Kel," Anders began, in a slow, calm voice "I'm sorry to have to tell you this, but, our entire family is dead, Mother, Father, Conal, Inness, Your Nieces and Nephew's, everyone."
