Laverne and her date were at a restaurant, one Saturday evening. It had been hot all day, and as they ate, a thunderstorm came through.

It was still raining when they finished their meal. They stood at the front door and watched it.

"I'm sorry I parked so far."

"It's not your fault, Paul. Let's just wait till the rain lets up." At that moment, it rained even harder. "Which might take a while!"

"Say, Laverne, I've got a wild idea: Let's walk in the rain!"

"You're right, that's a wild idea!"

"C'mon! Haven't you ever played in the rain, before?"

"Yeah, I have—when I was a kid!"

"So, we can pretend we're kids again. And besides, you were complaining about how hot it was, earlier."

"But my dress! I paid $30 for it!"

"I'll pay for your dry cleaning bill, how about that?"

She shrugged her shoulders. "Yeah, why not! Just a second." She slipped her shoes off. Then she picked them up and stuffed them into her purse. "OK, I'm ready."

They stepped out into the rain and begun walking. The sidewalks were empty, and only a few cars were out. The rain had indeed lowered the temperature. While waiting for a green light, Paul put his arms around him, and they kissed.

The car was three blocks away. By the time they got there, they were soaking wet! They got in, and he drove her to her apartment.

She invited him in for coffee. As he went in, she said, "OK, stop right where you are; I'll be right back."

"OK."

She went to a closet and returned with two towels, one of which she gave to him. They dried off. Then she walked to the kitchen and began brewing the coffee.

"Cream, sugar?"

"Two lumps, no cream."

The coffee boiled and she poured the glasses. They sat at the table and drank it.

"That WAS fun, walking in the rain, Paul."

"I'm glad you think so."

"But let's not do it again, for a while!"

"OK, fair enough! Oh, here." He took out his wallet and gave her a $5 bill. "For your dry cleaning."

"Thanks."

They finished their coffee.

"Sorry to throw you out, but my roommate will be coming home soon."

"OK."

They got up and went to the front door, where they kissed.

"You look beautiful, all wet!"

She laughed. "You're a nut! See you later, Paul."

Shirley came home, a few minutes later.

"Hi, Shirl."

"Hi."

She sat next to Laverne and kicked her shoes off. Then she looked closely at her.

"You're all wet, Laverne!"

"Paul and I walked in the rain together."

"That sounds fun."

"It was."

"Maybe Carmine and I should do it, sometime."

"You should!"
