I know this is a super short story, but this is obviously a dream of mine to be in CATS one day, so here's me compensating for that.
I enter the Neil Simon Theatre through the stage door. I jog up the stairs to stage right where my dressing room is that I share with 3 of my fellow actresses. When I arrive, I see two of them already starting their makeup.
"Hey!" I say in getting as I set down my bag.
"You excited for your opening night?" Sara responds.
"Hell yeah!"
It's opening night for about half of the cast. Including me. I sit in my chair and slip on a wig cap. I reach over and click on the lights that are surrounding my mirror. I sit for a moment, overcome with my thoughts. As I look into the mirror, I realize that my dreams have come true. I've finally accomplished what been trying to do since I was twelve. I'm playing Bombalurina on Broadway in CATS!
I've rehearsed for months, perfecting the song and dance, and getting into character.
"You okay?" Katie asks with concern as she walks into the room. I realize that I've been just staring at myself for five minutes. I start and say,
"Yeah! Just thinking!" They smile and get back to working on their makeup. Which reminds me to get started.
I'm just finishing up when the wig mistress, Natalie, walks in carrying my wig. I gasp and smile at the sight of it. She helps me put it on and attach it securely, before going to help the others with theirs. I stand up and put on my unitard with the help of our dressers. I put on my tail, shoes, and my leg warmers.
Just as I finish snapping the last snap, our stage manager, Lucy, comes on over the intercom saying,
"Ten minutes till showtime!"
I head downstairs to the dimly lit backstage. I can hear the rumble of the excited audience. The other actors and actresses file down from their dressing rooms, whispering excitedly.
Suddenly, the lights dim and the overture begins. The audience shushes itself. The overture ends, and the prologue begins. I leap out on stage and savor the moment as it is the happiest moment in my entire life.
"Are you blind when you're born?"
