The wind howled furiously, mercilessly battering anyone - or thing - that dared show even an ounce of courage. Two cats struggled through the brush, fighting the wind with what little energy they had.
"Leopardstar, may we rest? The storm, it-" Leopardstar whipped around, only her eyes visible as she regarded her companion.
"There will be no rest. You must forget why we are here, Fawntail. Tonight, we fear something far greater than the storm."
This silenced the smaller she-cat for a heartbeat. She thought for a moment, before speaking again, changing the subject. "If not for the weather, I imagine tonight would be beautiful."
"You always could find beauty in the bleakest of situations," Leopardstar agreed. At this, Fawntail laughed. A sad, empty sound.
"And you, Leopardstar, always winning your battles. There was never a will stronger than yours." The two cats shared heartbroken memories, recalling all they'd lost. There had been no time to grieve.
Perhaps the greatest loss of all was their innocence. Fawntail should have only just received her medicine cat name, and Leopardstar herself, was only old enough to have just been given her first apprentice.
Leopardstar suddenly turned her gaze to the other she-cat. "We are going to die." Fawntail hardly flinched. She had known this for a long time.
"Yes." This was always their fate. Only by some stroke of unimaginable luck, she knew, had she made it this far. That was, if you could call it luck. Perhaps it would have been luckier to die.
Leopardstar pressed on. "We had an agreement."
"Yes." Fawntail had known this moment would come. She had longed for it. "Get on with it, then," her voice cracked with the raw emotion she had been skillfully concealing until then. "Please."
Without a word, Leopardstar advanced on her companion. She sank her teeth into Fawntail's throat, biting down until she felt the other she-cat's blood, and her life pool out. Choking back tears, she let Fawntail's body fall to the ground.
"You are safe now, Fawntail. Watch over the others for me."
So, uh. An idea popped into my head one day, and I decided to write it out. Anyways, I'm not too sure how this will end up looking. Feedback on whether I should continue would be much appreciated :)
