It was the most beautiful
of summer mornings hot and humid. Merry watched the blackberries he had so
carefully picked disappeared into his companions rose bud mouth and sighed.
"You'll get fat or sick" he said, his companion looked up and wiped
the purple ring from around his mouth.
"Says you" Pippin stuck his tongue out and went back to stuffing
handfuls of summer blackberries into his mouth, Merry smiled and lay back in
the grass.
Ever since Pippin had been born Merry had taken it as his duty to watch over
and protect his treasured mischief-maker and best friend; they went every where
together and did everything together. He turned to look at Pippin, committing
every well-loved detail to memory.
The little boy had little auburn curls that stopped around his shell shaped
ears and big green eyes that brimmed over with tears at the mear
mention of a cruel word; his skin was alabaster with rosy cheeks and light
freckles over his nose.
But he was wicked and sly, impish and clever.
He kept people on their toes.
Merry on the other had was pail from long times inside, his hair a fine
chocolate caramel and his brown eyes full of wisdom beyond his age, his ears
pointed and mouth cupid bowed.
Merry was handsome, Merry was smart, Merry was trouble. None had ever seen
anything like them; the little terrors caused mothers to tut
and fathers to cover their children's ears when they passed by.
Apparently they where a bad influence.
Merry wouldn't disagree with that.
He leaned over and grabbed the basket from small hands.
"Hay" his little friend, yelled jumping up hands on hips "there mine"
"Come and catch
me" Merry yelled dancing happily across the field, Pippin gave chase
Screaming and laughing they tumbled around in the grass, squashing the
blackberries under their squirming bodies.
The sun smiled down on them happy among the long grasses of there home.
A tiny little paradise tucked away in the corner of The Shire.
