Spider
She had dealt with the end of the world, jailed several of the most tortured criminals, and had no- well almost no-fears. The only thing she truly feared, besides on occasion her father, were spiders. They looked creepy with their glossy black bodies and 8 appendages. Whenever she saw one, she inevitably froze. She had coached herself several times over not to be afraid of them, using every excuse. 'I'm much bigger than them, they are more afraid of me than I of them' she thought but it did nothing to quell her fears.
So when she saw the spider crawl from beneath her book, it was all she could do not to scream. She had decided to spend the afternoon at the tower instead of tagging along with Beast Boy, Cyborg, and Starfire to the mall of shopping and the arcade. Robin, of course, had stayed behind to do research on the latest criminal menace that was terrorizing Jump City. 'As usual' thought Raven, the resident goth titan. She was glad he was in his room and the others were gone and could not witness her fear. They had only truly seen her afraid once, after wicked scary, and even then she managed to retain some dignity and composure. All she could do now was watch the spider slowly crawl from under her book and wait for it to get sufficiently far away from her so that she could grab her book and go.
"What are you looking at Raven?" asked Robin. Raven turned to him to give a reply but was shocked to see Robin in a red t-shirt and pajama pants, a far cry from his usual traffic light attire. 'Of all the times he had to initiate conversation, why now?' Raven silently asked herself, but replied, "Waiting for that spider to get away from my book."
Robin laughed. "Why not use your book to crush the spider?" She, in her mental disarray, had not thought of that. She looked over at the spider determined to crush it, but felt herself freeze up again. Noticing her tense up, Robin playfully asked "Your not afraid of spiders, are you?" However, when Raven didn't reply he knew he had found the answer. Walking over to the coffeetable, he picked up her book and crushed the spider. He then took the book, and walking over to the kitchen, took a paper towel to wipe off the corpse of the spider and throw it away. "There," he said with a smile, handing the book back to Raven.
"Thank-you," she stated, deadpanned as ever but he could sense the relief eminating from her as she relaxed. "Don't mention it," he said as he kissed her on the forehead and made his way back to his room.
