Rufus lay spread out on the silk sheets and looked up at the ceiling blankly. It had been two months now since he had barely managed to escape Shinra Headquarters with his life. He was supposed to be taking it easy and resting, but his mind was far too active to allow for sleep. He considered calling Reno on the PHS but decided against it. Reno would only keep him up more or fuss over him. He sighed and got up slowly, so as to be careful and not strain any of his injuries. A knock sounded at his door interrupting his plan to go for a short walk around his apartment.

"Come in."

"Hey boss. I'm just coming in to check up on you. Tseng was being a ninny and worrying his head off about you again."

Reno snickered and went over to his boss. He unceremoniously flopped onto the bed next to where Rufus had been and drug his boss back down. "No walking around if you don't need to! Otherwise you open up your wounds again and Tseng'll kill us both." He smiled crookedly at his boss and laughed seemingly just at the thought of being alive.

Something is wrong with the sum of us

Rufus looked over at his employee and wondered how he could always be so happy, so full of life. Even when things were at their worst Reno always seemed to have a smile on his face. Rufus wished he could be like that, if only for one night. Reno scooted closer to his boss and pulled him into a gentle hug, laughing as he did so.

"Cheer up boss! You're always so serious. I mean you're alive, right? So what's there to be all depressed about?"

Rufus hugged Reno back and buried his face in his shoulder. He tried to feel anything at all, but there was nothing but a great emptiness inside of him. He had too busy trying to be something that he's not that by now he didn't even know who he was anymore. Where his heart should have been was nothing but an empty void that threaten to shallow him. Reno tilted his head in curiosity and then shrugged and held Rufus closer to himself. He really did care for his boss, even if he was an idiot.

"Reno."

"Yes boss?"

"Could you teach me something?"

"That depends on what it is."

"Teach me how to live."

Reno stared at his boss and could not help but pity him. He had spent his whole life trying so hard to be better than his father and somewhere in the process lost his sense of humanity.

"Hey boss."

"Yes Reno?"

Reno suddenly pulled Rufus into a kiss and held him there for several long moments. When they finally broke apart Rufus just stared blankly at Reno unsure of what he meant by his actions. After all Reno was known for doing crazy spur of the moment things.

"I guess what I'm trying to say is, I love you."
