Disclaimer: I don't own Bleach, or any of the Bleach characters used in this fic. They all belong to Tite Kubo: the genius behind the captivating manga that started it all. I only own any of my original characters that I choose to include, as well as any of my own original plot ideas.
Sacrilege
Prompt: He disagrees...
A/N: AU.
"You planning on sitting there all night?"
Of course not. It was a stupid question, even for him. This was an important thing for her. Not that he would know. As far as he was concerned, sitting around paying one's respects to the dead was a blatant waste of time. A child's game, really. Time could have been better spent with more pressing matters. Really, he just didn't care. For her, however, it was an important ritual. Sometimes, she wondered if he even believed in the gods. From time to time, Mayuri would make comments that implied that he did. Still, it was always pretty vague.
"No," she says plainly. It's clearly not the answer he wants, but it'll have to do. Retsu can't always explain everything. It takes the fun out of the puzzle. "But it's still important."
The condescending scoff manifests yet again, the disdainful look fulfilled by the way he narrows his eyes. Retsu can feel it coming, the lecture, and she suddenly feels like a student all over again, dreading the words.
Strangely enough, he catches her off guard.
"Tch. Do what you want," he says, making a face. "Just don't expect it to pay off, waste of time that it is."
Yes, he would be the one to say such things, and not just to her. But, so far as she's concerned, Mayuri's long-since talked himself into believing his own words. As for how long it's gone on, there's no hint for her to go on.
"So, I take it you don't believe?"
He turns to look over his shoulder, giving her that half-smirk. "It's far too late for gods."
This doesn't express my opinions in regards to religion or worship in any way. I just thought it would be an interesting subject to throw at these two.
