Add flour, milk, eggs, and sugar. Stir. Whip egg whites until fluffy then add to batter. Place half a cup of batter into waffle maker and wait two minutes.

It was a very exact recipe and made all the better by her messy, slanted handwriting. I knew this recipe by heart, but I pulled the card out every time just to see the lines of faded ink and conjure the memory of her writing it.

I was a collage frat boy. She was beautiful. I was enchanted idiot. She was working for a charity bake sale. I made terrible waffles.

She had the good grace not to laugh and wrote me a new recipe. "My phone number is on there too you know," she'd said.

"Just in case I have a cooking accident?"

"Or for anything else." She'd winked. "I didn't catch your name?"

"I'm Edward."

"Well then I'm Bella."

I fell in love with her. We got married. We were having a baby and I was so happy.

She only got to hold our daughter for three minutes. You think dying in childbirth is something that only happens in third world countries until something goes horribly wrong.

"Daddy? What's that smell?"

Mirah climbed onto a barstool and she looked so much like her mother I almost forgot about the waffle in the maker.

"They're very special waffles, baby."

And for just a moment I felt like Bella agreed.
