one moment of truth in your lies

He promised her. He had held her hand, being so gentle, and he looked into her eyes and he promised her. His voice was strong and she thought he meant it. She believed every note of his empty promise.

But she should've known. Promises are never kept and if they are they're kept out of self-preservation.

Why should she have expected anything less?

She called out for him – a hoarse shout as she felt her insides swell. – even reaching her hand out, waiting for him to grab.

He looked back, his eyes softening.

He mouthed – so discreetly she almost didn't see – "I'm sorry." Before he ran off, saving himself and forgetting her.

But her mind flew back to when he promised, looking sincere, that he'd protect her. Did he mean it?

Glimmer guessed it didn't matter anymore, because she would surely die and he would surely win.

She was screaming without realising it. Fear rising up in her chest, suffocating her. She was finally dying. She saw contortions and heard voices – they were talking about her, whispering harshly – before seeing her mother's worn face stare at her.

Glimmer screamed again, and Cato's face replaced her mom's. He was all she saw as she sank down low, feeling the dirt on her knees through a hole in her pants.

He broke his promise . . . and even as she lay, caught between death and life, she tried to think of why she cared so much.

Meerh. Not the greatest thing ever, but oh well. This was requested by someone (I don't who, since the review they left was anonymous), and they asked me to write this scene in a Glato kind of way, to show that the careers aren't heartless killers. Uhhhm. I'll do one in Cato's point of view tomorrow or something which will show that – so think of this as a prequel, Guest.

lol it felt so weird to use 'mom' and 'pants' instead of 'mum' and 'trousers'.

Soo yeah.

Oh p.s. the title is from The GooGoo Dolls' song 'Iris'.
