Phil Brooks stood in his girlfriend Andrea's kitchen on the night before her birthday. He planned to surprise her by making her a chocolate cake.

They'd gone to dinner that night at a restaurant called Kismet that served a decadent dessert known as Dark Chocolate Kiss of Death cake. Andrea swooned as she ate each bite of its rich sweetness.

"This is the best cake I've ever tasted. ", she said, her voiced tinged with ecstasy.

"I've got to track down this recipe and surprise her with this cake for her birthday," Phil thought.

When they got back to her apartment, Andrea went to bed early because her bake shop opened at 6am the following morning.

"Good night, love," she said and gave him a soft kiss on his cheek. He pulled her back towards him and kissed her passionately. "Sleep well, birthday girl."

He got out his laptop and began searching for the recipe. There were several that claimed they'd broken Kismet's secret. He looked through them all to find the ones with the highest user ratings and best reviews.

"Wow, this looks more complicated than I thought it would be," he said to himself. He'd never made anything more complex than a Betty Crocker cake from a box. "How do I separate eggs?"

He got four eggs out of the refrigerator and set them on the counter. He searched the cabinets for a measuring cup to pour milk into. He turned around when he heard something fall to the floor. Two of the eggs rolled off the counter and cracked leaving egg yolk splattered everywhere.

"Ugh!" he groaned and went to the closet for a mop. He cleaned up the mess and got two more eggs from the refrigerator.

He finally managed to gather all the necessary ingredients and poured them into a bowl. He got out Andrea's mixer. The recipe said to gently fold the ingredients in, and then mix them at medium-high power for two minutes making sure the batter was smooth.

"There's no fold setting on here, and what's medium high on a scale of 1 to 4?" He started at the lowest speed 1, and then switched to 3. He switched to the higher setting too quickly, and the bowl spun violently. Dark chocolate cake batter hit the walls.

Andrea awoke and came downstairs wondering what all of the noise was. She heard Phil cursing up a storm and noticed the mess in the kitchen. "What are you doing?"

"Trying to bake you that damn cake you liked so much at the restaurant.

She giggled because she knew he wasn't very good at baking. She helped him clean up then she looked over the recipe. "Here, let me help you. "

They managed to get the cake into the oven, and went into the living room to snuggle on the couch while it baked. She noticed a small drop of cake batter on his face and leaned in to lick it off. He pulled her into a playful kiss.

"Thank you for the cake," she whispered.

"Happy birthday, I love you."

The End.
