*A SUSPICIOUS CIRCUMSTANCE*

*I want to thank everyone for your warm welcome to your Gunsmoke world and for your wonderful reviews for my stories. Several have mentioned I should try putting my stories in chapter form but there are several reasons I don't. First, and most important when I get an idea I play the whole story out in my mind and I get started and can't stop. Although this story took many twists and turns as I wrote and is different, in many ways, from what I first conceived. Second, being as computer challenged as I am I am not sure how to do chapters and not lose my work. Lastly, I am very impatient and like reading everything all at once or maybe I'm not good at cliffhangers. Anyway, I hope you enjoy reading this as much as I enjoyed writing it. ***SPICE ALERT***

The man and woman stood across the street from the United States Marshal's office in Dodge City, Kansas. It was a sunny fall day. The man was in his early 40's. He had sandy colored hair, gray eyes, an angular face, was about six feet tall, medium build, and smoking a cigar. He wore a blue suit with a white shirt and a blue and red silk tie. The woman next to him was just a little above average height, she was slender but not skinny, was high breasted, had amazing silky raven black hair, sea green eyes with lush eyelashes, porcelain skin, and was dressed in a form fitting blue silk poplin dress that accentuated all her assets. Most people thought of her as breathtakingly beautiful.

They saw a tall thin young man with a limp accompanied by a short older man with gray hair and a moustache leave the Marshal's office. Looking at some papers the man explained. "The younger man is Chester Goode, he works for the Marshal, and the shorter man is the town doctor Galen Adams. They are best friends with the Marshal." They watched as the two men seemed to be arguing with each other as they walked to the bar down the street called the Long Branch. He went on to tell the dark haired beauty that the saloon was co-owned by a man named Bill Pence and a woman, Kitty Russell. "It is rumored that the Marshall and Miss Russell may have quite a close relationship."

Putting her hand on his arm she said, "I think this would be as good a time as any to go talk to the Marshal."

Escorting her across the dusty street the man politely knocked on the office door. They heard a deep voice call. "Come in."

Matt Dillon, the U.S. Marshal, was busy with a pile of paperwork. He glanced up when the door opened and looked down at his messy desk only to jump up as he took as second look at his visitors. He eyes widened at he saw the vision of loveliness walking toward him. She smiled at him and he almost stumbled over his own feet pulling out a chair for her.

"Sit down ma'am." he said huskily.

The man seated himself used to having men react in this way to his female companion. Once the Marshal was seated on the edge of his desk the man began. "Marshal Dillon, my name is Alexander Manning and my companion is Anne Marie Murphy. We are here on government business and what we are about to tell you cannot ever leave this room.

Matt looked at Manning skeptically. "I haven't been advised of any such visitors coming here."

Looking around as if to make sure the walls of the office were impenetrable he lowered his voice, "Marshal this is such sensitive information that we could not take a chance sending it through the mails. I am working for the U. S. treasury department and Miss Murphy is a special agent on loan from the secret service. I have all our credentials right here." He pulled out a packet of papers.

The Marshal opened each document and read it carefully. "It all seems to be in order Mr. Manning so what can I do for you and Miss Murphy?"

"Are you sure we won't be interrupted Marshal Dillon?" She asked in a low melodious voice.

Scratching his head he told her, "Unfortunately I can't control who comes in and who doesn't."

She looked at her fellow agent and suggested, "Perhaps we could find a more private place to explain what we need from Marshal Dillon."

Manning asked, "Could you suggest such a place Marshal? It is very important we get you involved in this project."

Thinking for a moment he considered the upper floor of the Long Branch but it was too public. Finally he admitted. "I do have a very private room of my own that few people know about we could meet there."

They looked at each other and asked him, "When could we get together?"

"I do rounds around nine o'clock at night we could meet after that." Matt told them.

He gave them directions and they parted agreeing to meet later. As they were leaving Chester was coming in. He doffed his cap at the young lady and his eyes practically bugged out as he really looked at Anne Marie.

"Why Mister Dillion that was about the prettiest girl I ever done see."

"She is a looker that is for sure." the law man agreed.

"Are they moving here? Chester asked hopefully.

"Maybe," Dillon told his assistant.

"Are they married?" the younger man wondered.

"No they came in together and he was just escorting her because she is here alone."

"Well did they come in on the stagecoach?" He asked next.

"Nope." The big man said.

"Well then they must have come on the Santa Fe. I can't see them riding in or coming in a wagon. I didn't see a buggy outside."

Looking askance at his helper Matt told him, "you are sure full of questions today."

"Well I caint help it if ah am interested in newcomers." Chester tried explain.

Matt grinned. "Especially when they are so attractive."

Chester was flustered. "Well I swan a fella caint be interested in his fella man without someone actin like there is somethin wrong with them."

"I'm sorry Chester, how about I take you to dinner and then to the Long Branch for a beer afterwards?"

"Waile that would be alright. Oh I forgot Bill Pence said to tell you Miss Kitty is comin back tamarrah instead of later this week."

Wrinkling his forehead Matt commented. "Either things went very well in St. Louis or not good at all if she is coming back so soon."

"Now Mr. Dillon she has been gone almost three weeks. Ya know ya miss her as much as we do."

Ducking his head the big man did admit things didn't seem quite right when Kitty was gone. Trying to change the subject he got up and grabbed his hat. "Let's go get that dinner."

Never one to miss a meal Chester followed him out the door.

That night the Marshal went quickly about his rounds. Kitty was not in town so there was no reason to linger at the Long Branch. Luckily Chester was involved in a poker game and pretty little Melinda Gale was sitting next to him encouraging him. Going to his private quarters he waited impatiently for Miss Murphy and Mr. Manning to arrive.

About ten minute to ten they finally got there and Matt looked appreciatively at the raven haired beauty dressed a sapphire silk dress with white lace at the collar and cuffs. He had cleared off the two chairs in his room. "I think we need to get down to business."

Wearing the same business suit from earlier and putting his hat on his knee Manning began. "Marshal Dillion, our government is having a problem with counterfeit bills. We've caught quite a few of these gangs back East. Now we are hearing they are moving into the Midwest and smaller towns. They use these smaller denomination bills in general stores and a lot in saloons where a lot of poker and faro money changes hands. Now Anne Marie, as am I, is specially trained to recognize this money. I have, by special arrangement with Mr. Bodkin at the bank, been hired to work there.

"That sounds like a good plan. Is Miss Murphy to pose as your wife?" Matt inquired smiling at the young lady.

"No, No Marshal, Anne Marie has asked for a job at the Long Branch Salon as a dealer. We spoke to a Bill Pence today but he said his partner, a Miss Kitty Russell, does the hiring for him now and she will be back in town tomorrow." Manning explained.

Matt ran his hand through his thick dark wavy hair. "Well I appreciate your giving me a heads up on what is going on but I don't really see what part I can play until you catch these counterfeiters and then I will arrest them."

Anne Marie spoke up in her sultry voice. "Why Marshal I need you to be my liaison person."

Decidedly uncomfortable the law man tried to explain, "Why I think Kitty Russell would be a much more appropriate person with whom to confer. She's honest, intelligent, and knows how to keep her mouth shut."

That is all well and good Mr. Dillon but she has a partner to answer to, the fewer people that know the better, and we know you are not married so you taking an interest in a beautiful woman like Anne Marie would not seem odd. You could invite her to dinner, out for a walk, or even go to her room. I assure you this will be all above board and Anne Marie is a complete professional when it comes to her work."

Feeling quite uncomfortable now Matt replied, "I like to keep my private life private. Being such a public figure people tend to talk. I also wouldn't want Miss Murphy's reputation soiled."

The young lady laughed. "Don't worry about me Matt when the whole story comes out people will understand completely. You don't have to be afraid of me I don't bite."

"Oh ma'am it's not that I'm thinking of I want to be sure to not put you in an awkward situation."

She reached over, touched his arm, looked at him with her big green eyes and said in a soft voice. "Please Marshal you really can be a great help to us and I PROMISE not to ruin your reputation."

Giving in reluctantly the law man acknowledged, "Alright now let's see how it goes. Just let me know when everything is set."

Getting up the agent held out his hand and as they shook hands he remarked, "Now remember we go with the story Anne Marie and I just came in on the train together but don't really know each other. In fact Mr. Pence recommended Anne Marie stay at a Ma Smalley's for now and I am at the Dodge House."

"In fact if you wouldn't mind Marshal you could walk me back to Mrs. Smalley's so I don't have to go back this late alone." Anne Marie suggested.

Manning said, "Give me a couple minutes head start before you leave here.

Once the gentleman had left Matt was becoming very discomforted. He slowly opened his door and looked all around and when he was sure it was clear he motioned the young woman to follow him. He tried to stay to the back streets as much as possible but he had to come on to the main street just beyond the Lady Gay and who did he run into but Chester.

"Mister Dillon." He called out but when his boss stopped and he saw who the big man was with he started to stutter. "well...ah...uhm...I...mea...mean...wh..o...air...ya...ugh with?"

"Chester, this is Miss Anne Marie Murphy. She is new in town and I found her wandering around trying to get back to Ma Smalley." Matt explained.

"Oh." was all Chester managed to say as he stared at the raven haired beauty."

Matt continued, "Miss Murphy this is Chester Goode, my friend."

"Well I am very happy to meet you Chester." She extended a small hand. "I hope to see you around."

Getting what Matt thought of as his goofy smile, around women, on his face Chester said finally finding his voice, "Why Anne Marie what a beautiful name and if ya don't mind I'll walk with ya and Mr. Dillon to Ma's."

The lovely young lady told him she would be delighted. They chatted as they made their way to the boarding with Chester doing most of the talking. Once she was safely inside Chester remarked on her beauty but Matt was only half listening he had more important things on his mind and the main one was named Kitty Russell.

Leaving Chester at the jail he headed to his room to contemplate how to handle this situation with this new girl and his relationship with Kitty. He missed the beautiful redhead and was looking forward to their reunion upon her return. They had become fast friends after Kitty began working at the Long Branch and before he realized it he was stopping in every day and sharing his day and a lot of his past with her, which he did with no one else.

Kitty was a great listener, smart, and insightful. She had a rough and painful past and was even more reticent about sharing than he was, but she had come a long way in trusting him. He didn't want to do anything to break that trust now that they had gotten even closer. He wasn't sure when his feelings had changed to wanting to be more than friends. Thinking back she had certainly caught his attention that first day in Delmonico's and he was glad to find out she had stayed in Dodge. Nothing really romantic had happened between them until the Hack Prine incident where he had to kill his old friend. She had been there for him and they had shared their first kiss. Things had then gotten more and more intimate after that and he had come to think of her as his girl although he had not officially asked her.

Now here was this complication and he was supposed to show an interest in Anne Marie which he knew Kitty would not like and he couldn't explain. Hopefully the counterfeiters would be caught quickly and he could explain everything to Kitty.

Morning came too soon after the Marshal's restless night. He thought if the train was in on time it should be there around noon. Dressing quickly he decided to have his work all done so he could concentrate on Kitty. Maybe they could have dinner with Doc and Chester although he would like to have her all to himself.

Chester came in and asked if he had breakfast yet. Matt told him he was getting ready to head over to Delmonico's in a few minutes.

"That's good thing Mr. Dillon ya know when ah go too long without food ah get kinda of dizzy."

The Marshal said finishing up the report he was working on, "yes I know Chester."

Matt got to his feet put on his gun belt and grabbed his hat as Chester remarked, "you know Miss Kitty is goin ta be back taday. I sure miss her when she is gone so long."

Looking at his assistant the law man said, "She hasn't been gone that long.

"Now ya know darn well Mr. Dillon ya missed her too. Ah course ya have been busy with that Miss Anne Marie."

Dillon looked at Chester knowing he was digging for information about the dark haired beauty. "I am just helpin her get acquainted with the town like I would any newcomer. You also don't have to mention anything about her to Miss Kitty. I think she might be trying to get a job at the Long Branch."

"Well I swan Mr. Dillon I know when ta keep ma mouth shut."

"Did I hear what I just thought I heard?" A voice behind them asked.

Sounding aggravated Chester remarked, "ya knowed what I said Doc I can keep ma mouth shut iffin I'm told to."

Swiping his moustache and shaking his head the doctor said, "That's the problem you have to be told to keep quiet or it is all over town."

The Marshal walked ahead of the quarreling twosome. "I am going in and get a table I'm hungry."

Hurrying to catch up they soon joined the big man. "What did you have to warn him not to say?" The good doctor inquired.

"Oh just the regular things." Matt remarked offhandedly.

"Now ya knowed that ain't true Mr. Dillon you didn't want me ugh tellin about ya an Miss Anne Marie to Miss Kitty."

Arching an eyebrow Doc commented archly, "Oh Miss Anne Marie. Is she a new contender for your affections?"

"Now Doc you know better than that." The Marshal was clearly annoyed.

"Ah Doc wait till ya see her what ugh purdy little thing. She has black hair, green eyes, skin like a silky white rose, and a beautiful figure. She's almost as purdy as Miss Kitty. I think she kinda has eyes for Mr. Dillon. She's lookin fer work at the Long Branch an she come in on the Santa Fe just yesterday."

"Chester!" The Marshal was clearly aggravated. "What did I just tell you?"

Clearly offended he protested, "ah was only tellin Doc."

Raising his hands in defeat Matt said, "I give up let's just order."

Doc said under his breath but loud enough for Matt to hear, "Oh that's right and Kitty is due back today." The law man just gave him a dirty look.

By noontime Matt still wasn't sure how he should approach Kitty about the newcomers. Should he mention Anne Marie applying for a job or just keep his mouth shut. Of course the train was on time. He, Chester, and Doc had been waiting for about 15 minutes and his assistant was making them nervous with his constant chatter. Kitty was about the tenth person off the train and she was wearing a golden brown suede skirt with a beige lace long sleeve blouse and matching jacket and hat. Her face lit up when she saw her greeting party. Her golden red hair and porcelain skin took his breath away.

Of course Chester had rushed up to greet her saying, "Miss Kitty it is so good to see ya back. It ain't the same without ya."

She smiled at Chester but her eyes sought out the Marshal standing at the back of their little group. Doc came forward and embraced her saying, "I sure did miss you honey. I'm so glad you are back safely."

She hugged the doctor but winked at Matt over his shoulder. "I sure missed all of you too." She moved over to the law officer and he squeezed her hand when all he really wanted to do was take her in his arms and kiss her senseless.

"Kitty," he began. "I am so glad you are here to save me from being with these two all the time and having to listen to them carping at each other."

Laughing she slipped her hand into his arm. "I missed you too Cowboy and how about heading to the Long Branch for a nice cold beer and then I can wash and clean up?"

The men said, gathering up her many bags that was a great idea. They laughed and chatted on their way to the saloon. Her partner, Bill Pence, was mighty glad to see her and joined the group so he could find out about the convention held by the Beer and Spirits Association and why she was back so soon.

She was explaining that she concluded their business in less time than expected and missed home. "I have a lot of advertising pamphlets to go over with you Bill."

Kitty didn't notice the batwing doors open but all the men did as the dark-haired beauty, dressed in a pink cotton dress decorated with tiny white and yellow flowers, walked into the bar. The piano player had been practicing and when she walked by her faint violet fragrance caused him to play the wrong notes. The young lady proceeded over to the table where they were sitting.

In her low melodious voice she asked, "Would you be Miss Kitty Russell? I'm Anne Marie Murphy and I am looking for a job. Mr. Pence said I needed to speak with you."

Looking her over Kitty told her, "I just got back a little while ago and as soon as I finish this drink I need to clean up. If you could just come back in a couple hours we can talk."

"That would be fine Miss Russell, a couple hours then." As she started to walk away she veered over to Matt and put her hand on his arm. "It is nice to see you again Matt and thanks again for rescuing me last night."

Four pairs of eyes were watching his face as Miss Murphy walked away. "What? I was only helping her find her way back to Ma Smalley's."

Kitty raised an eyebrow and said somewhat sarcastically, "She couldn't find her way down the street?"

Looking embarrassed he said, "Kitty, it was pitch dark and she got turned around. What could I do just leave her in the alley?"

She lowered her eyes and admitted, "I guess you're right. Well if you gentlemen will excuse me I am going to go and wash up and change my clothes." The men stood up and watched her climb the stairs.

"Do you want another beer? Doc asked them.

Chester accepted another beer since Doc was buying but Matt told them he had some errands to run. Finishing his drink he got up to leave trying to decide if he should try to get up the backstairs of the Long Branch in broad daylight or wait until later that night. He came to the conclusion it was better to let well enough alone. After all Anne Marie needed to get a job at the Long Branch to do her job. He would definitely be welcoming his redhead home later that night.

mkmkmkmkmkmkmkmkmkmkmkmkmkmkmkmkmkmk

There were the normal amount of drunken brawls that Saturday night, cowboys shooting off their guns, and enough noise and laughter to keep the Marshal and Chester busy. It was after 11 when he began his rounds and after midnight when he made his last stop, as usual, at the Long Branch. He was pleased to see Kitty had given the government agent a job but not so pleased when he walked in the batwing doors and the young lady made a beeline for him and tucked her hand in his am.

"Come sit with me Matt." she coaxed. Matt saw Kitty staring daggers at them.

"I guess I can for a moment but I'm doing rounds right now." He agreed.

Looking around and lowering her voice she leaned into him. "I need to know who some of the big spenders are that will come in here and will be passing money around. I also need to know who a resident and someone is new throwing money around."

"I can help with some of that but I am not around all the time. As I told you before Kitty could really help you with that information. She is smart and discreet."

Looking sad Anne Marie said, "I wish I could but I have my orders." Taking his hand and playing with his fingers she told him. "You know how that is when you have official orders."

Disentangling himself from her he admitted what she said was true. Then he excused himself and walked over to Kitty. "Friendly little thing isn't she?" The redhead observed.

"I think she is just lonely." Matt remarked.

Shooting her dirty looks Kitty remarked, "Lonely my foot. She has set her cap for the Marshal."

"Now Kitty..." He began.

"Don't you, now Kitty me Marshal Dillon. I know the signs. You sure don't know much about women."

Sliding his arm against hers on the bar and exerting pressure he said lowering his voice, "Well she doesn't get me. I am spoken for.

Tilting her head to look up at him Kitty intoned, "Don't you forget it either Mister."Laughing he told her he would see her later and headed for the office.

Making sure things were calmed down for the night and the bars were closed down the big man made his way to the back of the Long Branch and walked quietly as possible up the back stairs. The door was open and listening for voices he made his way to Kitty's rooms. He heard nothing as he tapped lightly on her door. She must have been waiting because in no time she was pulling him into the room wearing nothing but an emerald green lacy nightgown.

Taking her into his arms he said, "I've been wanting to do this since you walked off that train." He leaned down and touched his lips to hers as he was putting his hand behind her head, tangling his fingers in her silky tresses to kiss her even more deeply. Inhaling her essence he couldn't seem to get enough of her luscious lips. Kitty had her arms around his waist and began running her hands up and down his back.

When he finally released her Kitty breathed, "Wow Cowboy I guess you really did miss me."

Leading her to the settee he settled her on his lap. He brushed back her curls. "Don't ever doubt how much I care for you. Nothing is the same when you are gone. Doc says I get cranky."

She laughed, "That's nice to know." Leaning against his chest she sighed and took hold of his hands and slid her fingers between his. Kitty brought them to her mouth and kissed each finger. Then she took each one into her mouth and sensuously sucked them. Matt groaned at this unexpected action and sensation.

"Feeling better Cowboy?" She inquired as her tongue moved to his neck and she began lightly biting. At the same time she began trying to take off his vest and he was so distracted he could barely help her.

As it got twisted he finally said, "Kitty let me do this." Readjusting her on his lap he rapidly divested himself of the vest and unbuckled his gun belt. Leaning forward he was trying to get rid of the belt but she was unbuttoning his shirt and running her fingertips over his chest and when she moved her mouth to his collarbone he could barely think.

"You have far too many clothes on Marshal." She informed him.

Trying not to laugh at her impatience he remarked. "If you will just give me a minute I can remedy that situation."

Standing up she said, "I'll be waiting."

As he quickly removed his shirt, boots, and pants she began pushing him not so subtly toward the bed. "Just what do you have in mind young lady?"

Looking at him innocently the redhead fluttered her eyelashes at him. "Why Mr. Dillon are you questioning my motives? I just wanted you to know how much I missed you." She moved toward the big man and slowly moved her arms to his bottom and began massaging until he grabbed her hands.

"Do you have any idea what you are doing to me woman?" He wanted to know.

Opening her eyes wide she answered softly. "Why I thought I was seducing you Marshal."

Taking a deep breath he smiled at her. "Well I think you need to slow down if you want you get the full effect. With that he scooped her up and deposited on the bed. Before she could move he was lying beside her and pulling into his arms. He ran his large hands over the tips of her breasts causing her to gasp.

"I think it is time to help you get rid of your clothes also Miss Russell." and he proceeded to pull up her gown revealing smooth creamy skin. He ran his calloused hands across her full firm breasts and leaned down to take each rosy peak in his mouth. He suckled them until she was gasping for air. "Turn about it fair play." He informed her playfully.

"If that is the game you want to play mister two can play at this game." Rolling on top of him she began sliding her body against his making sure the sensations were making him rise to the occasion.

He had his hands on her hips trying to slow her down but she was determined to take the lead in their lovemaking. He suddenly flipped her over and used his size to try to regain control but she put her hand down between them and began stroking ever so slowly. "Kitty Russell." He moaned as the touch of her hands rippled through him.

Sliding her tongue into his ear and wrapping her legs around his waist she whispered. "Please make love to me Matt."

That was all the encouragement he needed as he raised up slightly pulling her with him and thrust into her. As he settled into her she moaned his name over and over until he moved faster and faster encouraged by the need in her voice.

"My beautiful girl," he breathed as he began to reach his peak. "I don't think I can wait much longer."

"I'm ready sweetheart just a little more and..." Then all they knew was the ecstasy of fulfillment.

He rolled off of her panting and then pulled her into his arms nestling her under his chin. "You need to go away more often if this is the result."

"Not on your life buddy, you are gone often enough as it is." Her tone was emphatic.

He brushed her hair from her damp forehead and ran his hand down her cheek. "You know Kitty you grow more beautiful with every passing month why do you put up with an oaf like me?"

Kissing him lightly she explained. "Sometimes I wonder that too but I guess it is because you are the handsomest, most loving, incredible man I have ever met and you treat me so well."

He looked deeply into her sapphire eyes and admitted. "I feel like I neglect you too much and maybe you should find someone to give you everything you want; a home and family.

Sitting up and crossing her legs under her she took his hand and stroked it. She said seriously. "We're both young Matt and I know how it has to be with us but time changes things and who knows what may happen. I'll tell you one thing I would rather be with you the way you are than not have you at all in my life."

Pulling her to him Matt said, "Oh honey I hope I can always live up to your faith in me."

Sliding her arms around his neck she whispered, "So far so good Cowboy."

Putting his hands each side of her face his tongue lightly traced her lower lip. Opening her mouth to his probing tongue she inhaled his breath and they moved in a fiery dance that exhausted both of them while it incensed their bodies. They couldn't seem to touch each other enough in so many places.

Matt was moving his fingertips up and down her thigh, rubbing as he went. When he reached the vee where her thighs came together he gently slid her legs slightly apart so he could ease a fingertip into her center and begin to rub her most sensitive area. She moaned his name as the sensations flowed through her body. She arched to his hand encouraging to move faster. "God, Matt, oh my God." She writhed as his movements in and out took her higher and higher. When she finally reached her peak he put a hand on her mouth to muffle her scream.

Kitty lay exhausted in his arms trying to calm her breathing as Matt continued to taste her breasts laving them all over. Slowly she moved her hand down to the hardness between his legs and began to stroke it until he stilled her hand. She began to sit up and lean over his lap. Sliding her tongue just over the tip she began readjusting her position and began ever so slowly to use her lips to bring him to the ultimate climax. His breathing was heavy and he was moaning deep in his throat. "Oh honey that feels so good but I want to be one with you."

Slightly disappointed Kitty let him reposition them so she was straddling him. She lifted herself up and slid down on his erect, throbbing manhood.

He held onto her hips as she raised and lowered herself without losing their connection. He told her, "I can't wait any longer."Their heated skin was taking them to new heights of fulfillment when they heard a pounding on the front door.

Kitty thought she was hearing wrong but then she heard Doc's voice calling her name. She laid her head on his chest trying to catch her breath. Why she started to laugh she wasn't sure. Thank goodness the knocking hadn't come a few minutes sooner. Moving off the big man she rushed to her bedroom door and she called down, "just a minute."

She looked at Matt who was already hurrying into his clothes knowing Doc would only come there in an emergency. Throwing on her pink ruffled robe she hurried down the stairs and threw the doors open.

Pushing their way past Doc were Chester and another man carrying a disheveled and hysterical Anne Marie Murphy. "What in the world?" Kitty was mystified.

Directing them upstairs Doc asked her which was a free bedroom. Kitty told him number eight. While they were getting her settled the redhead turned to the physician. "Just what is going on doctor?"

"There was a break-in at Ma Smalley's and a man got into Miss Murphy's room. She fought him off and has some cuts and bruises and a slightly sprained ankle. While I was examining her she kept saying she couldn't stay there. So we brought her here." Doc explained.

"I guess she will be safe here." Kitty acknowledged.

"I'm going to give her something to make her sleep. Where's Matt? We couldn't find him."

"Why ask me?" She inquired.

Before he could reply Chester came bounding down the stairs. "I looked all over fer Mr. Dillon Miss Kitty and ah don't know where he could be."

Trying to remain calm Kitty said, "Maybe he got called out somewhere."

Doc scrubbed his hand across his moustache as he narrowed his eyes at the lovely proprietress. "I'm sure wherever he is it was an emergency.

She gave him a dirty look as Matt came strolling through the saloon doors. "What are you doing open at this hour Kitty?" He asked.

Before she could answer Doc spoke up. "While the law was taking his leisure somewhere there has been terror in the streets. A man got into Miss Murphy's room at Ma Smalley's and tried to attack her. She was petrified to stay there so we brought her here."

"Mr. Dillon ah looked for ya everwhere." Chester announced.

Ignoring his assistant the Marshal asked, "Can I talk to her Doc?"

"You'll have to make it fast I want to give her a sleeping powder." Doc informed him.

They all trooped up to room eight. Anne Marie was lying in the bed her eyes wide and her teeth chattering. Matt and Doc went over to her while Chester and Kitty waited in the doorway.

When she saw the law man's large form hovering over her she quickly sat up grabbed his arms and threw them around her. "Oh Matt!" Her voice broke. "I've never been so scared. You make me feel so safe."

Looking embarrassed and trying to disentangle himself he said, "Anne Marie Doc wants to give you something to relax but I need to ask a couple questions. Can you describe the person who tried to attack you?"

"No" she shuddered and grabbed his hand. "It was too dark and it happened so fast."

"How did they get in?" He inquired.

"Through the window I think. I had opened it because it was stuffy in my room. He was so strong, pulled me out of bed with one hand, and covered my mouth with the other "She explained.

"How did you get away?" Matt wanted to know.

Answering in a shaky voice the young lady explained, "Somehow I managed to kick him hard in the shin. He howled in pain, dropped his hands, and I started to scream. He ran for the window and I ran for the door. I stumbled getting into the hallway and fell as several borders ran from their rooms. Ma Smalley sent for you and Doc and then they brought me here." By the time she finished she was sobbing and had a death grip on his hand.

"That's enough Matt she needs her rest." Doc mixed a sleeping draught for her and pulling her hand from Matt's advised her to lie back and try to relax. She started to protest but the doctor assured her he would stay with her until she was asleep.

Kitty led the way downstairs and asked if anyone wanted a drink. Never one to pass up anything free Chester said he could use a beer. Matt and Kitty each had a whiskey. Settling at a table the Marshal asked Chester if he had looked over Anne Marie's room.

"Yes ah did Mr. Dillon since we couldn't ah find ya so I looked at it."

Matt knew his assistant was dying to know where he was so to avoid telling him anything he asked, "Well what did you see?"

"Whal I seen the open winda an the drapes was a hangin on the outside. Miss Anne Marie's beddin was all tangled up and part way on the floor, an a small table was knocked over. The poor thing was a sittin ina chair when ah got there and was just a shakin."

Finally turning to Kitty he wondered. "Is it alright for her to stay here?"

"It should be okay. I'm sure Bill won't mind." She told him.

Putting his hand on her arm he wanted to know, "When she wakes up in the morning could you talk to her to see if she remembers anything else?"

Looking him right in the eyes she commented, "Why I think she would must rather do her talkin to you Marshal."

He started to comment but got up and told Chester they needed to get over to the office. Kitty got up and began to gather their glasses and she leaned over and whispered to him, "Just so you know Mr. Dillon your shirttail is out in back.

mkmkmkmkmkmkmkmkmkmkmkmkmkmkmkmkmkmkmkmk

Three days later Anne Marie was much better and back at her faro table. Kitty was behind the bar helping Clem refill the shelves. Matt had done his best to reassure Kitty he had no interest in the dealer. He wasn't sure she believed him but he had stayed away from the sick room getting information about her through Kitty. He had seen Alexander Manning at the bank and the man had indicated he was frustrated that their work was being delayed because of this incident. Matt was now on his way to the Long Branch to give Anne Marie the list of names she asked for and let her know that tonight the soldiers and cowboys would be in with their month's pay. Also the cattle buyers were due in next week as the first herds arrived with all the drovers. So in the next two weeks a lot of money would change hands. Getting the note to her without Kitty seeing was the trick.

He walked to the Long Branch that afternoon from his office greeting citizens along the way. As he got to the batwing doors he stopped and looked in as usual checking out the crowd but of course checking as to where Kitty was and with whom she was talking. He walked over to the bar and ordered a beer as he said, "Hello Kitty."

She told him she would be a few more minutes but to go sit at a table. Just about that time Anne Marie decided to take a break and hurried to sit beside Matt. A group of soldiers walked in followed by Doc. In the confusion Matt slipped the list to the dark haired beauty. Kitty was too busy to notice but Doc saw it and decided to join them.

'Say there Marshal shouldn't you be out there chasing down some bad guys?" Doc asked seating himself next to Anne Marie and taking off his hat.

"Don't mind him." he told her. "If he can't be grousing about something he isn't happy."

She laughed and put her hand on Matt's arm. "I think he is charming." She smiled sweetly at Doc.

Looking around the doctor caught Kitty's eye and held up a finger. "Why thank you I always appreciate a young lady with good taste."

Leaning toward Anne Marie Matt commented, "You are only making him more vain than he already is."

Just then Kitty brought over Doc's beer and put her hand on his shoulder. "Is the Marshal picking on you Curly?"

Matt had a surprised look on his face. "No more than he picks at me."

The dealer looked at them strangely. "I better get back with the soldiers coming in." As she got up to leave the men started to get up. Just then a soldier backed into her, she lost her balance, and landed on Matt, and ended up on his lap her arm around his neck.

"Oh Matt!" She exclaimed. "I am so sorry."

The law man was flustered as he helped her to stand up and noticed Kitty wheeling around and her back stiff walking back to the bar. He said, "This wasn't your fault Miss Murphy."

He didn't need to look at Kitty to know she was glaring at him. Doc told him as he sat down, "You are in big trouble Mr. Dillon."

"I didn't do anything Doc."

Looking at the bar the physician said, "Tell that to Kitty."

Sighing Dillon said, "Women! I don't have to answer to anyone."

Scrubbing his hand across his upper lip Doc remarked, "Keep telling yourself that son."

"I've told you before and I'll tell you again I'm not getting into any kind of a permanent relationship with a woman." Matt was emphatic.

Looking at the young man for whom he cared so much Doc told him. "I'm not going to argue with you, you overgrown public servant but you are already in over your head and if you think you are fooling anyone you're not."

"Don't you have a sick horse to tend to or maybe a plague that's starting?" He asked the physician.

Kitty came over to join them. "Is it safe to sit here now?"

Not sure how to begin he finally blurted out, "Now Kitty I am not responsible for what happened."

Taking a drink of her beer she told him, "You didn't have to seem to enjoy it so much." Doc burst out laughing.

"It seems I can't win I'm going back to the office."

mkmkmkmkmkmkmkmkmkmkmkmkmk

It was late afternoon a few days later and Matt was returning from a trip to Emmett Bauer's ranch. Chester was waiting for him sitting on the boardwalk outside the office. As he rode up on Buck, Chester jumped up saying, "welcome home Mr. Dillon it sure is good ta see ya. We thought you might not make it this early with that storm all day yesterday."

"It sure is good to be back Chester. That was sure a gully washer," he acknowledged. "Say would you take Buck over to Moss' for me. I need to wash this dust off and change clothes I promised Miss Kitty I would take her to dinner when I got back."

Taking the horse's reins Chester said, "Sure thing and me an Doc were gonna take her iffin you dint make it back. So we cain all go together."

"Alright that sounds good give me about half an hour."

Chester told him fine and when he was through with the horse he would meet him at the Long Branch.

It was more like an hour before Matt actually made it to the saloon as Mr. Jonas had stopped him to get him to pay his monthly bill. They knew it would go faster if Chester wasn't around. Finally he made it to the bar and noticed right away Kitty was wearing a new emerald green dress. He always noticed her in green as it went so well with her fiery red curls.

"It's about time." Doc said. "Chester is about to faint from hunger."

"Sorry I got held up, let's go I'm hungry too."

As they started for the door Anne Marie called him over. "Just a minute he told them."

She leaned closed to his ear and whispered, "I have some news I need to share with you. Meet me tonight after I get off."

Looking around Matt realized his friends had left without him. "I don't know," he began. "I don't think I can."

She was firm as she said, "My room, midnight, its important." Then she turned back to her players.

Matt knew he looked sheepish as he entered Delmonico's and walked to their table. Kitty didn't mince words. "What was that all about?"

"She just wanted to know if there had been any progress on her break-in since I hadn't been around for a couple days." He lied.

"Of course she did." Kitty said with asperity.

"Whal I don think you have nothin ta worry about with that Miss Anne Marie, Miss Kitty cause ah saw her an that Mr. Manning, from the bank, real cozy like out back of the Long Branch late last night when ah was doin rounds." Chester informed them.

"It looks you might have some competition Matt." Kitty told him looking at him over the rim of her coffee cup

Nudging Chester with his elbow the physician asked. "Why you're not going to let some newcomer beat your time are you Marshal?

Doc was enjoying the lawman's discomfort. In Kitty Russell the older man believed the Marshal had met his match. He knew well that because of his profession Matt Dillon feared marrying and leaving a wife and family behind, but it was so obvious how the young couple felt about each other it was a shame they pretended they were just friends. To try and push them together in public the doctor loved to needle the big man whenever he could.

Chester couldn't wait to get his two cents in. "Ah told him ah thought Miss Anne Marie was ugh showin interest in him but ah guess he was just too slow."

Feeling very uncomfortable Matt wanted to be brusque with them but because he didn't want Kitty to get them wrong idea he said, "I hope you're not believing any of this Kitty. These two are always trying to stir up trouble."

Taking a few moments to answer Kitty finally commented. "You don't seem to need anyone else stirring up trouble with women, they seem to find you with little effort. As I've said before you sure don't know much about women."

"We need to order before I get in more trouble." The Marshal replied. "Although I don't know many men who know much about women."

During the meal the law man tried to keep the conversation on less volatile subjects. When they were through Chester and Doc were walking Miss Kitty back to work and Matt was going to the office to check over his mail. That might help him to figure out how to get into Anne Marie's room so no one saw him.

He stayed away from the saloon until he was doing his rounds. It was about 11:30 when he stopped in the Long Branch. There were cowboys and soldiers all over the bar but everything was peaceful. The doctor and Chester were at a back table with Kitty. He stopped by to say hello and he would be back some time after midnight.

Kitty responded. "I've heard that before." That was her public voice she knew since he had been out of town he would probably be coming up the backstairs to join her in her room later.

"It sure is windy out there tonight and it feels like rain. See ya later Kitty."

Matt had actually finished his rounds before he had stopped in the Long Branch so he circled around the back and made his way up the back stairs. It seemed odd he wasn't going up there to be with the beautiful redhead. He stood just inside the curtained area. Anne Marie's room was just in front of the curtain and all he needed was a distraction to slip into her room. Just when he had just about given up hope it started to pour down rain and the wind began to howl. The thunder shook the building and lightening streaked across the sky. It blew in the batwing doors and several men ran in out of the weather. The doors hit against the railings and Kitty and Bill Pence hurried to close them. That gave the Marshal just the chance he needed to get into her room. He didn't notice Doc had gotten up when the doors blew in and was turning around to sit back down and saw the back of the big man disappear into that room.

Sitting down in the only chair he took off his hat and wiped off his brow. His heart was thumping. He didn't like this sneaking around although he knew in a way that was what people would say he did with Kitty but he truly believed keeping their relationship private protected her from his enemies.

After about fifteen minutes the faro dealer came in the room not aware Doc was watching her. Seeing Matt sitting there she gave a sigh of relief. "I was afraid you wouldn't make it."

"I almost didn't." He admitted. "Now I can't stay long what have you found?"

Opening her bag up she took out a roll of bills separated them. "Now here on the left are genuine bills the four on the left are counterfeit. Alex has also found five bills. The problem is they are ones and fives and there are more of them floating around. I got two last night and two tonight. I can't say for sure who gave them to me but I have a couple suspects. The problem is with so many men in town it is hard to keep track of everyone. Now Alex received two bills from Mr. Jonas, one when Kitty made a deposit and two from a whiskey drummer who bought a bank draft. Mr. Bodkin vouched for all three of them.

"I would too." Matt told her. "All three of them are upstanding citizens."

Taking a deep breath Anne Marie told him, "I have to tell you all three of them are being watched. The whiskey drummer works a large area so Alex is notifying other banks to watch any transactions he makes in the next few weeks. Mr. Jonas it seems started his business in a tent years ago and built up from there. We feel one of his customers brought it in but his transactions are being monitored. Now I know you are friends with Kitty Russell but how well do you really know her?"

"I would stake my life that Kitty has nothing to do with this." Matt was getting agitated.

"Well there is some concern there Matt. Some of the girls told me she was just a saloon girl and within a year or so she was buying into a partnership. It seems odd a saloon girl makes that kind of money especially the way she dresses."

"And I'm telling you that Kitty Russell is not involved in anything like this." He sounded agitated.

Anne Marie put her hand on his arm, "Matt I know you don't want to think badly of your friend but her past with gamblers and on riverboats does not bode well."

Trying not to protest to loudly Matt explained. "Kitty is pretty smart. Not long after she got here Bill Pence, who hated the paperwork associated with his business, found out Kitty had a good head for accounting and organization. She got his books straightened out, really knew how to deal with the drummers, and did the hiring and firing of the girls as well as working the floor. She earned her way into this partnership!"

Looking him in the eye she asked, "I need to know just what is your relationship with Kitty?"

Matt was taken aback and hesitated trying to decide what to say. As he opened his mouth to speak there was a rifle shot and someone threw a piece of furniture against the wall. There was yelling and screaming but when he heard Chester shout, "Doc come quick it's Miss Kitty," he was out the door not caring who saw him.

The first thing he saw was a sergeant rushing the soldiers into some kind of order. Bill Pence was holding a gun on the cowboys. The saloon girl were gathered together in a corner and the doctor was wiping blood from Kitty's face as Chester hovered over them. Trying to rush to her side Doc stopped him. He asked, "What happened here?"

Looking at him and murmuring Doc asked him, "Do you really care?"

"What?" Matt was baffled. "Of course I care."

"Well," Doc began, "it seems like you are otherwise occupied."

Looking stunned Matt told the physician, "it's not what it looks like but I'm sorry I can't explain."

"I'm not the one you have to convince Marshal. Kitty saw you coming out of that girl's room. Now let me get back to my patient"

"How is she doc?" He asked.

"She only has a superficial cut but it's on her head and they bleed like the devil. The doctor explained. "However it is her emotional health with which I'm most concerned."

"I swear to you Doc nothing happened." Matt was quite contrite.

Touching the big man's arm the doctor said, "It doesn't look good son. You have to tell her something."

Kitty had been watching the two men, who were so important in her life, from across the saloon. Clem and Chester were helping to get things cleaned up and shepherding the cowboys and soldiers out the door. She didn't want anyone to see how upset she was and that her heart was breaking. There had been many men in her life and most had little regard for her. That is until Matt Dillon came into her life. He treated her like a lady. It was true he hadn't committed himself to her and hadn't asked her to be his girl but she thought they had an understanding. Since their first night together she had not been with another man. When he was away for a few weeks, knowing he had strong normal sexual appetites, she did wonder if he found other women to satisfy them. Yet being so blatant with that faro dealer, who was all over him, was too much to bear.

Finally he kneeled next to her and asked how she was. As the doctor was bandaging her wound she said softly, "I'll be okay."

"Kitty we need to talk. I need to try to explain some things." He pleaded.

She looked into those blue eyes looking so concerned, "I need some space Matt. Maybe tomorrow we can talk. I''ll let you know." With Doc's help she got up and went upstairs to her room leaving the Marshal only able to watch. He didn't see Miss Murphy peeking out her door with a look of satisfaction on her face.

Mkmkmkmkmkmkmkmkmkmkmkmkmkmkmk

It had been a long hard night for Marshal Matthew Dillon. He kept seeing the disappointment in Kitty's eyes. What could he tell her without breaking his promise he had made to Manning. Then there was Miss Murphy insinuating that Kitty might have something to do with the counterfeiting which was ludicrous. How did all of this get so out of hand?

He had little sleep by the time morning came. It was Saturday but there was no day off in the law business. Shaving and getting dressed slowly he wasn't really ready for all of Chester's questions. Yet he was no coward and would not try to hide out. Maybe he would take Buck out for a ride that way he could put off any confrontations. To his surprise there were Manning and Murphy mounting horses they had rented from Moss.

"Well just the man we wanted to see Marshal. Let's take a ride together." Manning suggested.

That was the last thing he wanted to do but at least he wouldn't be riding out with Anne Marie alone. Once Buck was saddled they headed for the Arkansas. They finally stopped at a grove of shady oak trees. Getting off their horses Manning spoke first. "Marshal we have a problem."

Holding onto his horse's rein he asked, "What would that be?"

"Well," he began, "I went through Miss Russell's deposit from the day before last and found more counterfeit bills."

Puzzled the law man asked, "How could you tell the money came from her?

"When she brought her deposit in yesterday I noticed there was a black mark on the bills. She looked and found a pen in the bottom of the bag. She laughed and took it out and said something about having to clean the bag. When I was checking out some bills in the vault I noticed some more bills in there with the same black marks. I had not taken them in myself but I found five more counterfeit bills."

Matt didn't want them to know how upset he was. "That doesn't prove she had anything to do with this. Bill Pence handles the money as do the bartenders.

Manning tried to sound apologetic. "I'm not accusing her Marshal but she is being watched carefully and we wanted you to be aware since you are such good friends."

'I'm telling you I would stake my life that Kitty Russell has nothing to do with any counterfeiting."

"Well you do Know her better than we do." Manning said snidely.

Swinging up onto his saddle the Marshal told them, "It's time I got back to town."

An hour later Matt was walking over to Delmonico's for breakfast. Chester and Doc were at a back table. "Well here comes Romeo now." Doc said nudging Chester with his elbow."

The law man glared at them as his assistant added, "Mister Dillon ah do have ta say ya got good taste she is shore is a pretty little thing."

"You both need to keep your thoughts to yourself." Matt growled.

Scrubbing his moustache Doc remarked, "I don't know why you are so flustered after all you are free and not involved with anyone in a permanent relationship."

"I'm not discussing this with you two." He informed them.

The doctor winked at Chester. "You know I notice that this big public servant spends a lot of time at a certain saloon maybe there is someone there he would like to discuss this with."

Trying to act serious Chester commented, "I think Bill Pence would love ta talk ta him about one of his employees."

The physician looked at the young man in amazement started to open his mouth to say something, shook his head and said nothing.

As their food arrived Matt asked, "Don't you have a catastrophe or plague you need to take care of Doctor, and Chester don't those cells need cleaning today?"

That seemed to take some of the talk ragging on him away for the time being. Matt was determined to get his work done so he could take Kitty to dinner and have a talk with her.

By mid-afternoon he had everything cleared away and told Chester he was running some errands. He hurried out the door and made his way to the Long Branch. Bill Pence was behind the bar and told him Kitty was back in the office. He headed back there realizing he was beginning to sweat a little.

He came up behind her and put hands on her shoulders. She jumped. "I didn't mean to startle you." he said trying to sound cheerful.

"Matt, what do you want? She asked twisting away from him.

Sitting on the edge of the table he told her, "I wondered if you wanted to have dinner with me, no Doc or Chester just me."

She raised an eyebrow. "Are you sure you are asking the right female?"

He took a deep breath, "I told you nothing is going on with Miss Murphy."

"You sure have a funny way of showing it." She commented.

He took hold of her shoulders. "Look at me Kitty." She raised her eyes reluctantly.

"I know things might look strange but I'm asking you to trust me. I can't explain right now but I wouldn't lie to you."

Her voice was low as she replied, "I do trust you Matt but you have to admit things look suspicious and Miss Anne Marie is doing nothing but throwing herself at you."

He tenderly touched her cheek. "She can throw anything she wants but I am not buying it."

"She is beautiful Matt." Kitty said hesitantly.

Leaning down and kissing her lightly he informed her, "I prefer redheads."

Sliding her arms around him she remarked, 'Don't you forget that Cowboy."

They heard Bill calling her and after they walked to the bar Matt told her. "I'll pick you up around seven."

"It's a date," she told him." She watched him walk away and thought how handsome he was, how he looked good coming and going, and no wonder women threw themselves at him. Well she would have him to herself in a few hour.

Unfortunately that was not to be. By seven that night Kitty Russell was being arrested for passing counterfeit bills.

mkmkmkkmkmkmkmkmkmkmkmk

Those hours had been a nightmare for Matt. Anne Marie and Manning had come into his office demanding they be allowed to search Kitty Russell's belongings. The Marshal felt a sense of shock. For a change even Chester was beyond words.

Getting up from his chair Matt asked, "Just what is going on here?"

Manning making himself comfortable at the little table said, "I think Anne Marie can explain best. You better sit down Marshal you aren't going to like this."

The young lady began. "Well we were very busy this afternoon. I came back from lunch and Jake Worth and Emmett Bauer and some of their boys were there wanting to play poker. The regular dealer is out sick so Kitty and I dealt for the house. I was watching the money she was playing with and noticed a couple bills that looked funny. That house money is kept back in the office and not generally mixed with the regular bills. I checked the bills she gave me and they were fine. When one game was over she was called away and stuck her money under the bar. She was gone a while and I got a chance to look at her bills and sure enough there were counterfeit bills. Now she won a couple pots and it could have come from that money but it is an awful big coincidence."

"So what do you want me to do?" The law man asked trying to act calm.

Manning explained. "We still want to keep Anne Marie undercover but I will go with you and we will search her room and office. I'm sorry to do this but we need to have some results soon my superiors are on my back."

"I think we need more proof than this Manning." Matt tried to stall them.

The government man became stern. "I am doing this with or without you Marshal. Knowing you and Miss Russell are such friends we thought this might be easier."

Shaking his head the law man said, "No matter how you do it, it will not be easy."

"Well let me get my things together and I will meet you at the Long Branch in fifteen minutes." Manning explained.

Walking over to him, laying her hand on his arm and looking up into his eyes Anne Marie told him, "I'm so sorry it turned out this way Matt."

When they were both gone Chester asked, "What are they sayin about Miss Kitty, Mr. Dillon? Who are those people?"

"They are government agents Chester," he said wearily. "They seem to think Miss Kitty did something wrong."

"Wal you knowed that caint be true, not Miss Kitty." Chester asserted angrily.

"No I don't believe it but they are in charge of this investigation. I don't believe they will find any real evidence but Kitty will be mighty upset."

"I'll go with you Mister Dillon." His assistant volunteered.

"I think you should go get Doc. Tell him to come in and see what is happening but not to say anything until Manning is through with this search and Chester you can't tell ANYONE Miss Anne Marie is involved." It was evident the Marshal was disgusted.

"Whatever ya want Mr. Dillon."

"I want this to go away." Matt said running his fingers through his hair.

Unfortunately the nightmare did not go away. Matt would never forget the hurt look in her eyes and he hated feeling he betrayed her. It became worse when they found counterfeit ones and fives taped under a drawer in her dresser. Manning wanted her in a jail call. The law man told him it was no place for a lady.

When he said, 'some lady' Matt bloodied his nose. Of course Matt knew he would have to pay for that later. They compromised that Kitty would go to Ma Smalley's and under guard.

In her room at Ma's he could tell she was in a state of shock. She opened her mouth to speak but he pulled into his arms and said, "I don't want you to worry about this I'll get to the bottom of this no matter what I have to do."

She pulled back blue eyes meeting blue eyes. She began, "Matt you don't believe I..."

He cut her off by leaning down and kissing her. She held on to him as if something precious was being pulled from her grasp.

"Doc is coming in to talk to you and give you something to help you rest. I'll be back a little later. It's going to be alright Kit."

He left her standing at the open window. He told Doc Kitty needed him and walked outside. Anne Marie was waiting for him and threw herself into his arms crying and when he tried to calm her she quickly pulled down his head and kissed him. Kitty saw it all with Doc standing beside her. He pulled her from the window and didn't see Matt push the girl away, and they heard every word.

"What are you playing at?" He asked her angrily.

Opening her eyes wide and trying to sound hurt she explained. "Why Matt I thought you would be so distraught having to arrest a good friend I was trying to comfort you. I'm sorry I upset you."

"I don't want you to be upset," he told her, "but I am very uncomfortable with such familiarity."

"Don't you think I'm pretty?" She wondered.

"Yes you are very pretty."

"Then what's the problem?" She seemed confused. "We are both adults, single people, and I am very attracted to you."

This man of few words was having a hard time trying to make her understand he was not available. He finally said, "In my job it doesn't pay to get into any type of involvement. I am a poor U.S. Marshal who couldn't afford any entanglements. Besides you will be leaving soon."

Sideling up to him she said seductively, "a man like you could make me want to stay."

"It just wouldn't work Anne Marie my job, and it is dangerous, comes first."

She turned away pouting. "If you change your mind I'm ready and willing."

'I won't change my mind," he told her firmly.

Chester was waiting for him at the office clearly upset. "What are we gonna do Mr. Dillon?"

Clearly at the end of his rope Dillon sat down heavily in his chair. "I don't know Chester. Judge Booker will be here in two days and I have to find some answers. The whole thing is crazy. Bill Pence was telling me how good they are doing just the other day. Kitty wouldn't need money and you know she is almost too honest. There has to be another answer."

"Where do we start?" Chester asked.

"I think we need to start by talking to Mr. Bodkin at the bank. I want to know if he has heard from any other banks about counterfeit bills circulating. They are also watching Mr. Jonas as he turned in a couple phony bills. Let's see if he remembers anyone paying in a lot of paper bills because they could mix them with real currency. I also want a chance to talk to Bill Pence when Anne Marie is not there. She is still living at the Long Branch so ask him, when he gets a chance, to come to the office."

They got up and headed over to the bank. Manning having blown his cover was not there. The Marshal asked the banker if any other banks were reporting counterfeit bills.

"Funny you should ask Matt. I sent off some telegrams and got them back late yesterday. They broke up a gang in St. Louis and their trials start soon. Kansas City had some problems but they said they think these crooks have moved on, Hays is on the lookout, and the President of the bank in Elkader said they know who was passing phony bills there. The owner of the general store is involved but the master mind got away. He is sending a description sometime tomorrow. The man goes by the name Karl Johansen."

Asking him to send over the description Matt and Chester headed for Mr. Jonas' store. Matt explained what was going on and of course the whole town was talking about Kitty and many not too nicely.

Mr. Jonas was more sympathetic. "Well I just can't believe Miss Kitty could be involved in anything illegal."

"I have to tell you that you were being watched as some of your deposits had counterfeit bills." The Marshal informed the storekeeper.

Jonas was clearly annoyed. "I have been in business here for years and I have never done one dishonest thing."

Holding up his hands up to try and calm the merchant Matt explained, "They know that and are taking it into consideration they think it may be a customer who is bringing in the phony bills. Has anyone been bringing in a lot of bills?"

"Well I don't think I would recognize one if I saw it," the shopkeeper admitted.

The lawman asked, "Would you keep your eye out for any odd looking ones and fives."

"Sure thing Marshal. I hope you figure this out for Miss Kitty's sake."

Taking his leave he told Jonas he hoped so too. "Chester will you get away from that licorice, we need to go."

"Go tell Bill Pence if he can get over to the office in an hour I would appreciate it. I'm going to see Kitty."

"Right away Mr. Dillon and please tell Miss Kitty I know everythin will turn out fine."

As they parted company his boss told him he would do that. "Thanks for everything Chester."

By the time he got to Ma's she told him she thought Kitty was asleep but he could look for himself. As he walked in he noticed she quickly closed her eyes and they were red rimmed. He sat next to her on the bed and took her hand which she curled into a fist.

"It's going to be okay honey," he said tenderly.

Her voice was scratchy. "I'm surprised to see you here Mr. Dillon."

"Where else would I be?" He was puzzled.

"It seems you would now have time to spend with your new girlfriend since you don't get involved in entanglements."

He took a deep breath, "I have told you over and over I am not interes..."

"I saw you kiss her." She said accusingly.

He ran his fingers through his hair. "She kissed me."

"You weren't exactly fighting her off." Kitty said in a strangled voice.

He took her hands in his and kissed them. "Kathleen Russell you listen to me there is only one woman in my life. No, I didn't plan to get involved but she has the silkiest redhead, sapphire blue eyes, the most beautiful skin, is intelligent, funny, boy is she feisty and has wormed her way into my heart."

There were tears in her eyes as she spoke. "I had to get arrested to hear all this from you?"

Looking abashed he admitted, "I should have said it a long time ago. Now I want you to know I am only upholding the law here but I am going to find out the truth. Please just trust me."

"Matt, I trust you." she said sleepily, "thank you for trusting me."

He looked down at the young lady who had his heart and thought she looked so small under that quilt. He wanted to just hold her in his arms until it was all over but he needed to find answers. He leaned forward and kissed her forehead as she drifted off to sleep. He went to tell Ma she was asleep and he was leaving. Ma told him to find out who was out to get Kitty. He promised he would because no one went against Ma's wishes.

Chester and Bill were waiting in the office. "How is she holding up?" Her partner wanted to know.

"I would say fairly well Bill, but I'm sure she's scared. You know Kitty she acts tough."

Chester put in his two cents. "Ah thank it's ugh cryin shame anyone doin Miss Kitty like that."

The other men agreed. "Would you recognize a counterfeit dollar if you saw it Bill?"

Bill wrinkled his brow and said thoughtfully, "Maybe if I had time to look at it and was looking for something suspicious."

"Now you just told me recently since you took Kitty as your partner things were better than ever isn't that right?" Matt questioned.

"You have it right Marshal she is a whiz at those books, handles the customers and drummers like a pro, she has brought in girls that really attract customers, and has really made the Long Branch a showplace. Going into business with her was the smartest thing I've ever done."

Matt thought for a moment. "Since that is the case who would want to set her up and why?"

"Ah'll tell ya what ah think." Chester said, "Miss Kitty seems ta get along with most everyone. Ah don't thank that there Miss Anne Marie likes her vary well because she is aftta you Mr. Dillon and ya do spend a lotta time with Miss Kitty."

Looking at his assistant Matt inquired, "Have you noticed a problem between the two ladies Bill?"

Pence hesitated and after a deep sigh said, "Frankly Marshal, all I really noticed was Kitty not beinh happy at the attention you were getting from and giving to Miss Murphy. Of course she wouldn't say anything but you could tell by her face."

"So you think she might have been jealous?" Matt asked sounding too smug.

"Well maybe but then Kitty does get a lot of your attention and Doc and Chester's too. It could be she was afraid of losing that." The saloon owner attested.

"Ah for one would never desert Miss Kitty," Chester added.

The law man was genuinely puzzled. "We are missing something here. Judge Booker will be here soon and I need some answers but I don't know where to look next."

"I wish I could help Marshal what I can do is ask the bartenders to keep an ear to the ground and pay attention to Miss Anne Marie." Bill told him.

As Kitty's partner was ready to leave Matt stopped him. "One other thing Bill could you kind of ask the girls how they feel about Miss Murphy?

"No problem Marshal the only one who isn't around has been Lynda, her ma has been sick but when she comes back I'll ask her."

The next two days seemed like the most frustrating of Matt's life. Mr. Bodkin's friend had not sent the description of the counterfeiter. Kitty got more and more depressed. Doc was so worried that she wasn't eating and sleeping and seemed to blame Matt for the lack of progress. Bill Pence had reported back that the girls did not particularly like Anne Marie and she stayed pretty much to herself. It did seem she had attached herself more and more to Alexander Manning but Matt was the only one who knew they were working together. Judge Booker was sympathetic but he couldn't put off the trial. What really worried the law man was there had been no more counterfeit bills circulated which made Kitty seem even guiltier.

The day of the trial Ma Smalley brought Kitty, dressed in a yellow cotton dress with white daisies on it, into the courtroom. Matt wanted desperately to take her in his arms but had to sit there silently until he had to testify.

Manning was first to testify showing his credentials and explaining why he was in Dodge. He explained he was working with Anne Marie Murphy and he had secured work at the bank and she at the saloon. They initially had three suspects but narrowed it down to Kitty Russell. Then he explained how they found the counterfeit bills in her room.

Then Anne Marie explained about seeing Kitty with a number of odd looking bills at the Long Branch and with the help of the Marshal had been able to be fairly certain Miss Russell was the culprit. When she said that Kitty put her face down on the table and began to cry softly. Matt wanted to stop the proceedings right then and say it was not true. Doc interceded at that point asking the judge for a recess to help Kitty calm down.

The Marshal hurried to her side and with tears running down her face she asked, "Matt how could you?"

Knowing everyone was trying to listen he whispered, "She's lying Kitty I swear she's lying."

Doc was furious as he led her to another room. "I think you have done enough damage for now Mr. Marshal."

"Doc," he protested. "Please believe me the woman is lying. I defended Kitty."

Looking at the man he loved like a son and he felt had disappointed him the doctor said, "I think stayin away from her right now would be for the best."

Matt was devastated and wished some emergency would occur so he wouldn't have to testify next.

A half hour later the trial bean again and Matt was called to the stand. Slowly dreading the next minutes he stepped forward nothing could stop this situation now. That was where he was wrong. The judge began to ask his first question when Chester came rushing through the door shouting, "Mr. Dillon, Mr. Dillon, it's an emergency."

The judge looked from Chester to Matt confused. Matt shrugged his shoulders. Judge Booker said, "We'll take a 15 minute break."

Mystified the law man hurried over to Chester. "What is going on?" He asked.

"Oh Mr. Dillon somethin funny is shore goin on." He was so excited his words blended together.

Trying to calm him Matt inquired, "Chester what happened?"

Taking a deep breath he explained. "Mr. Bodkin and Bill Pence are ah waitin fer ya at the Long Branch and ya has a telegram from the secret service that just come in on the telegraph."

"We don't have much time let's see Bodkin and Pence first." Matt led the way.

As they arrived at the Long Branch Dillon noticed Bill sitting with one of the girls. He jumped up and said, "Marshal, this is Lynda she came back this morning and when she heard about Kitty she wanted to tell me something but I just came in. She, well you tell him Lynda."

A brown eyes blond she seemed rather hesitant around the Marshal until he told her he didn't have much time before he had to testify. "Well, Marshal I saw Anne Marie sneaking out of Kitty's room. She was looking all around to see if anyone saw her. She didn't see me because I had just started to open my door when I heard a sound and didn't come into the hall. She seemed real nervous like so I waited a while to come downstairs. I was going to tell Kitty but my brother came to get me because ma is sick."

Before he could question her more Mr. Bodkin called to Matt. "I got the description of the counterfeiter. He is in his early 40's. He has sandy colored hair, gray eyes, an angular face, was about six feet tall, medium build, and a long red scar inside his left forearm."

"That could fit a few men." Matt observed thinking it over as Chester tried to get his attention. "Just a minute Chester."

Frustrated Chester exclaimed, "This is important too!"

Looking a little put out he looked at his assistant and wanted to know, "alright Chester what is it."

Seeming rather upset and hurt Chester explained, "Do ya remember I told ya I tol ya I seen Miss Anne Marie and that Manning out backa the Long Branch one night during rounds? Well ah dint tell ya he was really ah huggin an ah kissin on her an I saw a long scar inside his left hand. Ah course it dint mean nothin at the time."

Realization appeared on Matt's face as he clapped Chester on the back. "Chester, I'm givin you a raise. Go get Judge Booker quick."

Chester stared to run out the door and then ran back and handed the Marshal the telegram. Matt opened it and stood there with his mouth open. It read:

'Marshal Matt Dillon'

'U.S. Marshal'

'Dodge City, Kansas'

'This to inform you may have a counterfeiting ring operating in Dodge under guise of government agents. STOP

They abducted and killed Special Agent Alexander Manning, injured female partner Anne Marie Murphy recovering in St. Louis STOP

They are married. Consider armed and dangerous.

James Burlington, U.S. Treasury Under Secretary

Judge Booker came hurrying in. "What's going on Matt?"

The lawman showed him the telegram and had Bill, Lynda, Chester, and Mr. Bodkin tell their stories. The judge said, "I think we should go back to to court, put you on the stand, have you reveal all this and then arrest them."

They all agreed but the couple did not appear in the courtroom. Matt asked if anyone saw them leave. Moss Grimmick stood up and said, "Manning came to me during the break and ordered a buggy. I thought it was funny but he said he had testified and Miss Murphy was upset and they were going for a ride. As he rode off I noticed he had what looked like a suitcase in the back. I thought maybe they were going on a picnic."

Rushing out the door Matt said, "Come on Chester he must be picking up his wife. Let's get to Ma Smalley's."

There was no time to saddle the horses as they raced to Ma's to find out if bogus Anne Marie had left. Breathless, the two men could not believe the scene before them. On the porch was Ma holding a gun on the two criminals. "What is going on here Ma?" Matt asked.

Ma was indignant, "Well this little Missy thought she could run out without paying me!"

Pulling his gun the Marshal said, "I'll take over now Ma."

She looked at Matt funny. "You don't have to go that far Matthew Dillon just get them to pay me."

The big man put his arm around his favorite Ma and told her, "Ma you are the limit." He then looked at the two alleged murderers and said. "You two have a lot of explaining to do."

Epilogue

The two criminals whose names were really Harvey and Edith Hoover were ensconced in the Dodge City jail. There trial was quick and justice swift. Harvey was to be hanged and Edith would spend many years in a woman's Federal prison. Trying to get lighter sentences they named others who were counterfeiting. However, there was no reduced sentence for cold blooded murder. Government agents from St Louis came to escort the duo to their fate.

Before they left Matt asked that he and Kitty have the opportunity to question them. While that was an unusual request seeing that they tried to blame Kitty for the counterfeiting they agreed to a meeting.

Having recovered from her ordeal Kitty Russell wanted to know why she was chosen as their scapegoat. Judge Booker, two Treasury agents, Mr. Bodkin, Chester, Bill Pence, Matt, Kitty, Doc, and the Hoovers were in a secure room at the Dodge House.

Judge Booker and Mr. Bodkin wanted to know where they were getting their counterfeit bills. At first they refused any cooperation but when the Judge threatened to lengthen her sentence Edith gave them the location of the printing presses.

The treasury men wanted to know what other cities and towns they had passed phony bills. Again they refused any information until the agents let them know that the others they captured would know who turned them in if they didn't cooperate. So they admitted all the different places they had worked their scams.

Matt and Kitty didn't understand what part they played in this scheme. It was true they had duped other banks, businesses, and saloons but had never tried to have anyone there take the blame. They just took the money and ran when the situation turned sour.

"Why here, why us?" Matt wanted to know.

Harvey was not willing to say anything but his wife was delighted to enlighten them. "It was plain and simple revenge." She told them gleefully.

Kitty was perplexed. "Revenge for what. I've never seen either of you in my life."

''AH! But you have met my sister." Edith responded.

"Who is your SISTER?" Kitty was losing patience.

Very calmly the woman explained. "You should remember her you both were responsible for throwing her out of Dodge."

Matt and Kitty looked at each other mystified. Kitty said, "I don't have a clue who you are talking about."

Now Edith was getting upset. "You surely can't forget Rena Decker, my sister. Thanks to you throwing her out and letting other saloons know about her she feel on very hard times. YOU TWO RUINED HER LIFE!

Before Kitty could speak Matt retorted, "YOUR SISTER was responsible for the deaths of four innocent men. She is lucky charges weren't brought against her. Her sick need to have men fight over her caused a lot of misery. You aren't any better being willing to let an innocent woman go to prison for your crimes."

Well what else could we do she asked the Marshal? "I tried to take you away from her, you know the ultimate revenge, and we didn't realize Rena was wrong you are too attached to your badge to be involved with a woman. Too bad Marshal you and I could have fun."

"Get them out of here." The Marshal said savagely. "They have done enough damage."

As they walked out Edith tried to spit on Kitty and screamed, "HA! HA! You didn't get him either."

Doc remarked once the prisoners were gone, "I think we could all use a drink and I'm buying." Bill Pence called the second round, and the judge the third.

Sitting at a large table at the back of the Long Branch Doc proposed a toast. "To the truth coming out."

Chester who was thrilled at all the free beers raised his mug. "Ah wanna toast Miss Kitty and her freedom. Now can ya imagine them two thinkin they could break up Mr. Dillon and Miss Kitty's friendship?"

Doc almost choked, Bill Pence looked away, Judge Booker winked at Matt, Kitty had to hide her smile, and Matt just shook his head."

Trying to stop from making a remark Doc broke down and said, "Chester you make the greatest understatements in the world."

Looking perplexed Chester answered, "Doc, why do ya always have to say things ah don't understand? Are ya insulting me?"

Pulling on his ear the doctor said, "I give up."

Kitty patted Chester's arm. "Leave him alone Doc. He is the one who really helped solve the case by identifying Manning/Hoover."

"Thank ya Miss Kitty." He told her gratefully.

An hour later Matt said, "I hate to break up this party but I am way behind in my paperwork." He squeezed Kitty's shoulder and said, "I'll see you later Kitty."

As he left he heard Bill Pence saying. "I'm sure glad to have my partner back."

It was late that night when the Marshal of Dodge City had climbed up the back stairs of the Long Branch saloon and tapped on Miss Kitty Russell's

door. When she let him in the door he grabbed her, picked her up off the floor, and twirled her around. "You feel so good in my arms." he said."

She grinned at him. "Don't let Chester hear that Cowboy."

"Chester!" The Marshal exclaimed. "Thank God he doesn't know anything because everyone would know about us here and all points west."

Looking at him seriously she asked, "Would it be so bad if people knew Matt?"

He walked over to the settee and pulled her down his lap. Wrapping his arms around her he explained. "If I thought it would be safe for you I would shout to everyone you were MY GIRL."

"Your girl? She asked, "Am I really your girl Matt?"

Running his fingers through her silken locks he told her, "Of course you are honey. Yet I worry because of what almost happened because of Rena Decker who passed through here and we never really gave her another thought."

"You can't protect me from life Matt." Kitty said seriously.

Taking her face in his hands and looking deep into her beautiful eyes he admitted, "maybe not everything but I love you Kitty Russell and I'll do everything possible to try and keep you from harm."

"Oh sweetheart," Kitty sighed. "I love you too and I worry about you being in danger so much of the time. However, Mr. Dillon don't get the idea that I am letting you get away."

He smiled at her and said, "I think we can make this work and you, Miss Russell, are worth the effort."

"Until the next woman comes after you." She teased.

"There is no other woman. I can hardly handle you."

Getting up and pulling him toward the bed she challenged him. "We'll just see about that Mister."

Fin

This story was inspired by a Season Two episode called "Sweet and Sour". The character Rena Decker, a VERY attractive woman, loves to have men fight over her. Kitty warns the men about her but they are enthralled with the Long Branch's newest addition. Of course Kitty is proven right and Matt sends Rena packing. I felt she left with too little protest and so this revenge story is how I felt she got payback. I hope you enjoyed it. I also felt, at the end, Kitty get away with his shortsightedness too easily.
