Steele looked up and grinned as Laura walked into his office, the grin only dimming a little at the annoyed look on her face. He wondered if she had any idea how appealing she looked when something, or someone, usually him was bothering her. How appealing she looked in general.

"Mr Steele, did you really not think I'd notice?"

"Well one can hardly miss it, can they Miss Holt and you are after all a detective, a rather good one at that."

"So you're admitting it, then?"

"Of course, I'm admitting it, it simply had to be done."

Laura rolled her eyes amusing Steele who with restraint managed not to laugh but merely smiled.

"How much did you pay them to do that?"

"Oh." Steele paused and waved his hand casually, "I'm not sure, the usual amount, I daresay."

"What? You've done this before?"

"Not personally, but it simply couldn't be left, it wasn't safe."

"What's safety got to do with it?"

"Well Laura, you must admit it was a pretty big hole."

"Exactly! Which brings me back to my first point, did you really think I'd not notice?"

Steele straightened his tie and grinned appealingly, "Of course I knew you'd notice, and yes I admit I wanted to impress you."

"Impress me? Well you have a funny way of going about it."

"So it's not working then?"

"Not by a long shot."

"I couldn't leave it there Laura, someone could have got hurt."

"Oh someone could get hurt alright!"

"Perhaps I should have left it to Mildred to organise, would you have been this annoyed if she had done it?"

"Mr Steele, there is no way Mildred would do anything that irresponsible and downright sleazy."

"Now hold on a moment..."

"Don't tell me you're going to try and worm your way out of this."

"Worm my way out of what? I'm actually beginning to wonder why I bothered, I had the strange notion that you'd be pleased."

"Pleased? Pleased? Are you insane?"

"Well apparently so, since I thought I could do something nice that would make you see..."

"Make me see? Make you see more like."

"Hey! Hey! Hey!" Mildred said walking in, "Take off the gloves and tone it down will you?" she gestured with a nod of her head in the direction of the door. "We have clients out there."

"Well show them in, will you?" Steele said.

"Not until you both calm down, besides I need to ask you about this account from the carpenters who fixed the hole in the floor."

"They've sent it already? That was fast."

"When you hired them", Mildred said. "What exactly did you ask them to do."

"Oh not you too, Mildred, here I was thinking I was doing a good thing, a helpful thing."

"So what did you ask them to do?"

"This should be good." Laura said.

Steele frowning at her said, "I asked them to fix that massive hole in the floor, no more no less."

"No peephole?"

"No what?"

"No peephole, Mr Steele, a little tiny window.."

"Yes, thankyou, Miss Holt, I am well aware of what a peephole is and its function."

"And its reason?"

"More so than yours at the moment."

"Mr Steele", said Mildred, "Did you or did you not commission the carpenters to put a peephole in the wall between your office and Miss Holt's?"

"I most certainly did n... oh I may have."

"Aha! I knew it!"

"Not deliberately! The man asked if there was anything else we needed done and I jokingly said... but it was a joke, I tell you, a harmless joke."

"Well seems he has no sense of humour."

"He's not the only one." said Steele looking at Laura.

"Well, see how easily that was sorted?" Mildred said, "I'll send the client in and then I'll call the carpenters to come back to fix it up."

"Could you give us a few minutes?" Laura said.

"Sure honey, just don't hit the face." said Mildred as she walked out.

"Really, Laura, do we have to keep going over this? I suppose you've never made a mistake in your life?"

"Oh, I have Mr Steele." Laura smiled and kissed him quickly.

"When?"

"Rather recently in fact." she kissed him again.

"Which was?"

"It would seem, Mr Steele, that we share the same somewhat quirky sense of humour."
