Mail Time

Irony of ironies, Todd thought as he trudged back to the building he called home. The water had been turned off, the phone had been turned off, the power was probably going to be turned off soon; yet they still got their mail. Strange when you stopped to think about it really.

Once he reached the front steps, he sat down to sort the mail. Getting the mail had been his house-job for as long as he had lived here, and in all that time he had never sorted the mail before he reached the front steps. Today was no different in that respect than any other day.

"What'd we get today?" Fred asked as he appeared in the doorway.

"Oh, hey Fred. Sit down and let's see," Todd replied. "Lance's car magazine, ad, some kind of bill," he continued, handing each item to Fred in turn, "a credit offer, ...ooh some coupon books."

"What kinds?"

"I donno," Todd answered, handing one to Fred and flipping through another. "We got coupons for a burger place-"

"Yum, and for that new pizza place."

"And in the grocery section-"

"Laundry detergent and soap!"

"Yech! Oh, here's coupons for cheese and lunch meat."

"And one for bunches of grapes."

"Look, a coupon for a jewelry store!"

"A jewelry store, huh?" came a voice above them.

"Hi, Pietro," Todd replied, looking up. "We haven't sorted out your mail yet, sorry."

The speedster sat down on the other side of Todd and then continued as if he'd never been interrupted. "You thinking of doing a little shopping for my sister, Todd?" as he smiled and gave his friend a slight shove on the shoulder.

"Maybe," Todd replied and began to smile.

Before Fred could add to the conversation, however, the three boys heard a vehicle pulling up in the driveway. "Lance is home!" Fred announced as he got up to relieve Lance of some groceries.

"Better save the food so we'll have something to eat," Pietro said. "We'll talk more, 'kay?"

"Sure, buddy," Todd answered as he trailed after his fast friend.

I think that went well. Don't worry, I'm already writing a follow-up; although I'm not sure when that will be ready. Let me know if you have any ideas what else the Brotherhood could receive in the mail.
