Number Nine: Guide

"I have to keep a spotter's guide." she had told him, all of those centuries ago. He had just shrugged it off at the time, but now….

They were only a bit into their time at Darillium - maybe a month or so. They had spent the first few weeks…. catching up… and now they had settled into a comfortable routine.
The Doctor was just coming up from underneath the console, when he was startled by a sudden flash of light.
"Ah, that's nice!" he heard his wife crow, and he couldn't help but laugh in fond exasperation.
"What's that for, then?" he asked.
In response, River simply pulled out a little black wallet, and opening it up, she smirked at him. "The spotter's guide, of course." she teased. "It seems I've forgotten a face."
He smiled at her, walking over and kissing her gently. She - of course - moved to deepen the kiss, which he gladly accepted. She only pulled away when she heard the click of the camera.
"What are you doing, sweetie?" she asked him, laughing gently.
But her laughter stopped the moment he answered. "Adding to my spotter's guide, of course." He said, before walking down the corridor, leaving his wife floundering in his wake.
After a moment, she followed him down the hall to a room that she hadn't seen in a long time - his personal study.
She paused in the doorway, unsure if she should go in.
Luckily, he seemed to sense her momentary indecision, and chose for her. "Come on, then." he said, gesturing for her to come over to him.
She crossed the room, tucking herself into his side. "What do you mean, spotter's guide?" she asked, her voice laced with confusion. "I really have only ever had one face that you're likely to run into."
"Yes," he agrees, "but I keep one anyways."
"Alright." she says, trying to keep any hints of emotion from being evident in her voice. "Let's see it then." She crosses over to him, wrapping her arms around his waist and resting her chin on his shoulder.
Then she can't help but suck in an astonished breath as she sees the pictures that he has. There are only three - four now - pictures in the little folding wallet he has. But even just the fact that he has these photos is amazing enough.
The first one is familiar to her - achingly so. Amy's face smiles out of the picture at her, and baby Melody smiles up at her mother. This is the only picture of her mother that she really had as a child - she has no idea where he got a copy of it from.
The second one also makes her heart ache. This one is of her second regeneration - Mels - with Amy and Rory at their school formal. Amy and Rory had just barely become a couple, but were treating Mels like a daughter more than ever. It was even obvious in the picture - Rory and Amy were smiling at the camera, with a pouting Mels sandwiched in between the two.
And then the third picture - she nearly cries when she sees it.
At the time, it had just been another ordinary day for the Pond family - an evil warlord invading a peaceful planet; captures, kidnappings, and forced labor camps; the Doctor getting them captured with his ridiculous antics; herself, having to bust them out; and of course, plenty of explosions.
"There." he said quietly, slipping the most recent photo into place. "Perfect."
"But why..?" River began, then trailed off - unsure how to finish her question.
"Because why not?" he answered simply.
A/N~ Here we go, my sweets! Apologies for the odd ending, I just couldn't figure that out….
