Daria sat back and tried to consider a different way to teach her struggling friend the arithmetic of exponents. She had an idea.
"Okay, Jane, from real life, let's say we have four football players, Jeffy, Joey, uh, the other guy and Kevin. Each one is twice as dumb as the one before him. Kevin is the last so how much dumber is Kevin than the first?"
Jane frowned at first then brightened in delighted comprehension. "Eight. Kevin is eight times dumber. Yeah, I see it now. Two to the third."
