Tony couldn't stand it. MODOK's mental attacks were too strong for him, he couldn't stand it. But he needed to protect the Living Laser, at whatever cost. And if this…thing…really knew his secret identity, then he needed to be stopped before he hurt his friends. A lot more than the laser was in trouble by this point.
"I know everything you know, and everything you don't realize yet. I know everything about your life. I know your mother was killed by a murderer with a gun when you were little, that your father is dead, that you are now living with Roberta and Jim Rhodes, and their son James. I know you have a silly little crush on Patricia Potts. And I can take all this away from you if you do not surrender." MODOK threatened. Tony blushed at the crush comment, fully denying it. The thought stuck in his head for a long time, though.
The Laser then helped him defeat MODOK, and later that night, Tony was searching for some cereal as a midnight snack and talking to Roberta.
"Hey, one more thing…" Tony asked.
"Yes?" Roberta turned back to Tony.
"When someone says you have a… 'silly little crush' on someone, are they just teasing? Or does it mean I really have a silly little crush on someone?" Tony asked. Roberta smiled.
"Is this about that redhead girl, Pepper?" She said, a large grin decorating her cheeks.
"N-no! I-I was just curious…" Tony lied. Roberta chuckled.
"Sure it's not. I think you two would be absolutely adorable together, anyways." Roberta commented, leaving Tony alone in the kitchen, rosy red cheeks and frozen position. Rhodey came in, chuckling, and patted Tony's back.
"Dude, even my mom thinks so. Admit it, you like Pepper."
"I do not! We're just friends!" Tony defended.
"Whoa, chill dude. I'm just messin' with you." Rhodey said, thinking to himself that Tony was in complete denial, and that they are so not just friends.
Tony went back to his midnight snacking, left to think about what the Rhodes had just left him to think about.
