AN: This story is what could happen on tonight's episode (not that it will, but my take on 'what if Shonda loved us'). They're all in the courtroom for Callie's negligence case and Meredith (like all of the teens out there in class) can't pay attention. Enjoy.
"All of this courtroom talk, I can't help but think about—" Meredith's eyes saddened as she finished her sentence, "the plane crash." Derek looked at his wife and put his hand on top of hers for support. The judge continued, but Meredith's thoughts went elsewhere. They went dark, "DEREK!" "My sister is dead." "I've got PTSD, so, ya know, I'm not reliable!" The next thing she knew it was cold and dark. Her head hurt from a bloody wound she'd sustained in the accident. She was in the woods chewing spearmint gum and her person's head was resting on her shoulder. The fire had just gone out and it was quiet. Eerily quiet. Off in the distance she could hear animals in the woods. Her husband was asleep, the pilot was asleep, and her two colleagues were asleep. She and her person were the only two of the victims who remained conscious in the late hours. She was grateful she had someone like Cristina. No, they weren't the lovey dovey best friend type, but as dark and twisty as one may be, she always knew her person would understand her. Even when she'd given up and almost drowned, the first person she saw upon awaking was Cristina.
They were too tired to talk, but not wanting to sleep, they stayed awake and just listened to each other breathe. It was hard to push away the thought that the six remaining could possibly be the last living people they see alive. Meredith's thoughts shifted a month ahead and she was thinking about how quickly everything changed. On a dime, their lives took a turn and they'd lost Lexie and Mark. They'd survived not only the plane crash, but tragedy after tragedy and were still together in the end.
Meredith's thoughts faded and she heard the judge continue to talk about Callie's negligence case, but she was far too distracted to really listen. She kept glancing up and seeing Cristina from across the room. She looked so small from a distance and Meredith couldn't help but think about everything she alone had recently gone through. She'd lost a husband in her divorce, but soon after lost her lover/friend. Meredith felt like a jerk for letting her lose her person on top of that. She let go when Cristina needed her most. Meredith had let her life shift and, in the process, had left Cristina behind. There was a reason they'd lasted through all of these horrible things. She wanted Cristina to remain a part of her life. Everything she thought her future would be like included Cristina, she couldn't just remove her existence from that picture.
When all was said and done, everyone got up and left the courtroom. As fate would have it, Meredith bumped to Cristina in the scramble to get out of the room. Cristina not paying attention looked up to say, "Oh, I'm sor-" Her eyes met Meredith's and she froze. After what seemed like an eternity, Meredith spoke, "Cristina we need to talk."
