Disclaimer: I do not own Harry Potter or anything involved.

This is my first time writing a Harry Potter fic from the eyes of an animal. Note: I googled it, there's some argument over whether Fawkes is female or male, so I wrote it female.

A Phoenix lost

She sat there silently, waiting for her owner to return from another adventure. It was an evening of usual business, keep an eye on the owls of the school and watch out for any danger to alert her owner of. This was the task of Fawkes the phoenix, bird and pet to the headmaster of Hogwarts, Albus Dumbledore. Tonight was no ordinary night.

As Fawkes soared through the air searching for her next meal, a peculiar event suddenly took her attention. Facing her was a frightening glowing light in the sky, made up of the dark mark symbol. Fawkes quickly leapt into action as she cried out to alert all magical creatures on premise of the immediate danger. Once she made sure everyone was on duty and prepared as needed, she made her way back to the castle, spotting Albus with young Harry, who were also swiftly moving towards the castle. Fawkes flew in closely to let Albus know she was on alert. It was not before long that her owner took notice and nodded towards Fawkes in acknowledgement.

Fawkes flew up towards the Astronomy Tower with a fearful sense something terrible may happen and she may need to be there in case she had to protect Hogwarts and her owner. What was to come, not even Fawkes could have prepared herself for. She sat on the windowsill of the tower watching the scene take fold. She witnessed the young blonde man enter. Her body went very stiff. This was not a man to be trusted but yet her owner seemed to pay no mind to this factor. At one point, Albus turned quietly her way, and whispered "It's okay. No matter what happens, this was meant to be. Do not fret, stay on alert, and help the school as best you can. But do not begin yet. The time will come for you to fight. This is not the time." Fawkes nodded at him, beginning to feel uneasy.

The time passed on. She swore she could see slight movement in the corner where there was seemingly nobody there. She watched as the old man spoke calmly with this young blonde boy who still gave off a bad vibe. She watched in dismay and horror as more and more villainous beings entered the tower. In the background. She could hear the animals in preparation, moving with purpose; all prepared in case of battle. This was one thing in this moment that she was truly grateful for. However, it was her duty to later alert them of Dumbledore's message.

As the scene carried out, the fear and tension rose within Fawkes, but she was not able to act upon it, for she was loyal to her familiar and would not disobey his words. She knew he always meant well, and if he said to not attack, she would listen.

But then the moment happened. She would not have even known how to expect this, never mind the reaction she would receive from such shock. As she watched the once-trusted professor kill her owner, Fawkes' heart sank to the floor as she let out a single note in pain. She was broken, hurt, sad. There was nothing left. The great and wonderful Albus Dumbledore, headmaster of Hogwarts, mentor to Harry Potter, and most importantly, her beloved owner, had just fallen inches from where she stood watching. She swept down in one motion to her owner. Phoenix tears started flowing from her eyes, but this did not seem to even reach her owner. Before he passed, he spoke these few words to her.

"Remember, Hogwarts will always be there for you. Help protect this castle, and remember, everything is not always what it seems."
